1.1 Explain the Functions of Assessment in Learning and Development
1.1 explain the functions of assessment in learning and development
During the initial assessment, the assessor must introduce themselves to the learner and ensure that they understand what the course is.
The assessor must explain all the units to the learner ad support them in choosing the most suitable units.
The assessor and the candidate must then decide on an assessment plan. This will include setting dates and times to meet with the learner, as well as agreeing on the best assessment methods to use. For example, the assessor may use observation, question the learner or examine their work.
Once the learner has submitted an assignment or evidence, the assessor must review it to ensure that the learner has done what was asked of them and to ensure that it is in line with the assessment criteria.
The assessor then needs to provide the learner with feedback on how they have done. It is important for the assessor to be encouraging and give constructive feedback.
A feedback form should be used at this stage. Here the assessor can recommend ways of improvement, log what agreements have been made with the learner and set a deadline.
The assessor then needs to crossed reference the work with the assessment criteria to ensure that the learners work and evidence is reliable and valid and proves that the learner is competent in the unit.

1.2 define the key concepts and principles of assessment
Depending on the subject that an assessor is accessing, they will need to devise different ways of assessing to ensure that the learner has gained the skills and knowledge they need and to also ensure that the assessment method being used is fair, relevant, valid and safe. The assessment needs to be fit for purpose, to motivate and the guide the leaner. The assessor does not want to disadvantage the learner and must take into account the characteristics of the learner. It needs to be consistent and relevant to what is being assessed.

When making an assessment we need to pull on a number of skills to ensuring that the correct level of learning has been conducted by the trainer and that the learner has under stood the information given. The assessor has to be confident that the learner is also able to recall the information therefore giving them the skill set to conduct the role they are undertaking. The trained person should then leave the course with the new understanding and have thoughts on how they can apply the skills and improve in some cases the tasks that they will now undertake with their new knowledge.…

The assessor's role is two fold: to encourage learners to improve and to reinforce the learning that has already taken place. Assessors need to assist learners to recognise what they have already achieved and to highlight what learners may still require in order to improve or progress further. Additionally there are two forms of assessment that differ according to when they are performed: a formative assessment allows an assessor to ascertain a learner's current position or any learning that has already taken place in order to plan for further learning, improvement or development. Summative assessments allow information and evidence to be collected in order to confirm that learning has taken place.…

Assessment is used so that I can check that learning has taken place and to what extent. I use assessment at all stages of the learning process in line with organizational requirements; firstly by conducting an initial assessment with the learner. This shows me the level at which the work to be completed needs to be set and gives the learner a starting point. A diagnostic assessment is completed by the learner so that I can identify areas of weakness or for improvement, for example spelling or grammar. Additional information, such as learning styles can be understood through interview and questionnaire. I teach on a one-to-one basis therefore when the learner completes set pieces of work, I am able to formatively assess by using various methods. Such methods consist of written work, question and answer, observation, presentation of group work, practical activities or a demonstration. I also write feedback on ‘Post-It’ notes to praise a piece of work that is completed correctly and, if there are any criticisms, these are written positively so as not to discourage the learner and to help them achieve better results in the future. I use summative assessment at the end of the course by checking that all evidence of the learners work meets the criteria of the qualification. The learner makes drafts of work for each task and then a final text, often using current events for inspiration; they do this for different audiences and purposes so that the standard of work is of good quality and there is sufficient evidence for their portfolio.…

The functions of assessing is to start with the initial assessment, this is where we identify if they have any previous experience or knowledge that is relevant to the qualification that they will be assessed on and find out their individual learning style and what support is needed in there learning because everyone absorbs information differently. You can also find this information out from application forms or interviews. The next stage is assessment planning, this will include meeting with your learner about the outcome of the qualification and what work they need to do to achieve this qualification, as an assessor you would plan target dates for their work assigned to be done, The next stage is a continuous monitoring (formative assessment). The methods that can be used, could be assessor led by observations or learner led like writing statements this would allow the leaner and the assessor to plan further learning, this method could also be used at the end of the qualification (summative) where the assessor and learner would have evidence that the leaning has taken place for that particulate unit. As an assessor you will have reviewed the learner’s work that was given previously and you will give constructive assessment feedback on what they have achieved this time and what they need to do for next time to progress to the next level. Reviewing the overall progress of your learner can be done at anytime with your learner until they leave the company, this will give you the opportunity to discuss with your learner any issues they have and do they need more support in completing the qualification. The stages are then repeated after every unit until the learner has successfully completed the qualification; this also ensures the learner has a structured learning schedule throughout the qualification.
