This reflective essay uses a theory based rationale demonstrating the use of the 5R framework utilised for effective reflective practice. I shall be reflecting on, critically analysing and reconstructing an incident that occurred between me personally and a healthcare professional through my three week stay in hospital during February and March 2014. The essay focuses on a comprehensive description of the interaction, thoughts and feelings of the communicators during and after the incident, reflecting on and analysing the interaction from a theoretical perspective. I will be using my knowledge of communication models and communication theory, identifying the needs of the communicators within this interaction, discussing the communication strategies used during the exchange, exploring the use of verbal and nonverbal communication, and explaining the factors that I believe influenced the outcome of the interaction and may have had an impact on the relationship between the communicators. Conclusively, I write about the effectiveness of the communication based on my analysis of it and I identify one strategy that was used, by the communicators, and one strategy that could have been utilised to create a more positive outcome.
Reporting
The context is in a regional hospital, day three post- surgery. I had suffered severe ligament damage to my right ankle, a broken tibia at my left ankle and broken fibula to my left lower leg. The operation left me with an incision on both sides of my ankle and outer lower leg, my pain level was a five on the Abbey Pain Scale and I was completely immobile. The time was approximately 1500 and I was very bleary from the
