Adnan's Case Study
I feel that the narrator is somewhat bias on her reporting. Though she gives us all the information regarding the case if it makes Adnan look guilty, we somewhat feel that she is trying to prove that Adnan is not guilty and that his trial was not fair. Adnan’s cousin who knew of her because Sarah had written an article about Adnan’s lawyer contacted Sarah. This shows that the narrator was obviously interested in this case and even told us that she has spent a year looking into this case, this would show that could have bias towards the case.
One example of the narrator using connotation in her writing is when she said “teeny weeny bag of marijuana”(7:11). She said this when describing what she saw that day when she was visiting Rabia. She

Every day there are cases with little to no evidence and people going to jail despite the lack of evidence. That very thing happened to Adnan Masud Syed; On February 25, 2000, he was found guilty of the first-degree murder of Hae Min Lee. In January of 1999 Hae’s body was found manhandling strangled in a shallow grave in (name of park) one month after she went missing. Jay Wilds, Syed’s best friend, says he helped Syed dump her dead body but was not there for the murder. What happened to innocent until proven guilty? In Aleesha’s case it was apparent that aside from needing policy changes to the hiring process along with policies that help military families, there are also other political factors that failed Aleesha. One which seems to be a large scale issue is the drug prevalence in Aleesha’s community. Since Aleesha’s drug use predominantly began in her neighborhood and later progressed when she moved in with her boyfriend, which happened to be in the same neighborhood, it brings up the question of the accessibility and drug use in this area. It seems that the high drug use perhaps could also have played a role in her involvement with drug distribution. The political factor at hand that affected Aleesha immensely was drugs, because due to drug use and…

The reason the other side believes Adnan is guilty is because of one person; no, not Adnan himself; Jay, who says Adnan told him he was going to kill Hae. More importantly, Jay himself says that Adnan showed Hae’s body to him, as put: “I noticed that Hae wasn't with him. I parked next to him. He asked me to get out the car. I get out the car. He asks me, am I ready for this? And I say, ready for what?” And he takes the keys. He opens the trunk. And all I can see is Hae's lips are all blue, and she's pretzeled up in the back of the trunk. And she's dead.” (Episode I, Page 10). Jay is claiming to have been shown the body of Hae, and he is placing Adnan at the very scene of the crime. How believable is Jay, because according to Sarah and Bill Ritz, Jay’s story repeatedly keeps on changing. Sarah explains to the audience, “I put it to Bill Ritz when I talked to him briefly on the phone. Jay's story kept changing. You were catching the inconsistencies and he was having to explain them and clean up his story. So what ultimately made you believe him? Ritz said they believed Jay's story because “we were able to investigate and corroborate what he was saying.” (Episode 4, Page 68). Jay’s inaccuracies are either due the the fact that he…

Adnan Syed, 19, was convicted of murder fifteen years ago that placed him in prison for life. Mr. Syed, a Muslim, was charged with the murder of his ex girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, by strangling her and burying her body in Leakin Park. With this in mind, Adnan had a friend, Jay Wilds, who had assisted Adnan in the crime, but walked free out of his trial without having to serve any time in prison. Jay’s testimony of the crime had many inconsistencies that should’ve made him untrustworthy, but the jury still used his story as evidence to decide if Adnan is guilty of murder. Furthermore, the Serial podcast episodes, with Sarah Koenig as the narrator, involves Sarah reviewing the whole case of the crime as she also added many pieces of evidence from family and friends of Adnan and Hae, criminal detectors and the cops to try and discover the truth. The search for the truth without any clear details or information can make it very difficult to come to a conclusion. And after listening to all 12 Serial podcasts, I believe that Adnan deserves another trial, but it wouldn’t change the outcome from the first trial without more evidence.…

Stereotyping creeps into interviews quite often. As the case of Adnan, when his mother mentioned that she felt that he was an easy target because he was a Muslim, I would have to agree with her. Throughout the trial, Adnan religion and culture was called into question several times. Detective Ritz and MacGillivary tried to establish that Adnan motive for killing Hae was because he had sacrificed his religion to have a relationship and was tired of lying about it. When Sarah talked with the juror, William Owen, she mentioned that Adnan religion played a part at some point in her decision to find him guilty, but then tried to forget about it. But, when the other jurors were polled, Sarah discovered Adnan religion and culture was the determining factor for how they decided on a guilty verdict. Ms. Guiterrez tried to turn the case from, why was the murder committed, to who committed the murder was it Jay with the help from Mr. S? This strategy was used to eliminate any stereotyping that occurred during the prosecution line of questioning. Christina Guiterrez wanted Adnan to be tried without prejudice, regardless of his religion or culture.…

The people that were evidence were not trustworthy. One of these conspirators, Booth, said “In the presence of almighty god, I swear Mrs. Surratt is innocent of the crime charged against her.” Both the article and the book agree Powell was freely giving all information correctly and without flaw. We can conclude that Powell was telling the truth at this time, Powell was trustworthy when he said this. Mary Surratt was, as Powell said “innocent of the crime charged against her.” Powell is not the only person to claim Mary Surratt was innocent…

In everyday life, we see many examples of the flaws of humans and narrators. For example, CNN and Fox News are both news channels who usually have the same stories that they report on. CNN could report on the story from a more Liberal standpoint but Fox News could report on the same story but from a more Conservative standpoint. Whose story would you trust? That is the main flaw about our society and about people in general, is that we lie or re-write a story to fit what we believe or what we want to hear, instead of telling the full truth. Sometimes, these traits are similar even in fictional stories, when they involve the narrator. Narrators expose flaws when they introduce themselves in their conversations and actions. In the short story…

When Adnan was asked where he was at the time of the Murder he said the he was probably at track practice or at the library because he had time in between the end of school and track practice (Koenig 18 and 19). Later, after Adnan was arrested, when Serial Podcast reporter, Sarah Koenig, was looking into the murder, she found a letter from a girl named, Asia McClain. The letter said, “Dear Adnon, (I hope I spelled it right) I'm not sure if you remember talking to me at the library on January 13, but I remembered chatting with you (Koenig 29).” Asia also talks about how she was waiting for her boyfriend to pick her up that day, and that she and Adnan were talking until about 3:40pm. Sarah Koenig says, “Quote, ‘We left around 2:40pm,’ unquote. Remember, Hae is supposed to be dead by 2:36 (Koenig 29).” This letter from Asia helps me believe that Adnan was at the library with Asia at the time that Hae was supposed to be dead. In Asia’s letter she talks about how she was waiting for her boyfriend that day, and she remembered only because he was very late to pick her up and it was…

The first piece of evidence is when they say He was killed between 2:15 and 2:36 p.m. Adnan wrote a letter saying, “That is virtually impossible to do in that time” (Koenig, “Route Talk”). So Sarah attempted it herself and accomplished all the stops in that amount of time. Another piece of evidence is what cell towers pinged when they were driving. The time Jay says they were burying Hae and made a call collaborates with the tower that was pinged at that time. The last piece of evidence that is agents Adnan is the Nisha call. Adnan claims he is at the library at the time between school and track practice at 4 p.m. The Nisha call makes this statement of Adnan being at the library fauls, as Jay says, “Adnan spoke to some girl in silver Spring. Adnan put Jay on the phone with her” (Koenig, “Route Talk”). At the time Adnan says he was at track practice him and Jay are still together coming back from there drive. “The earliest we got back from the cliffs back to Woodlawn is 4:45 p.m. that means Adnan is very late for four p.m. track practice” (Koenig, “Route Talk”). With most of Jay’s testimony matching up, and Adnan being with Jay at the time Adnan claims he was at the library and track practice shows that Adnan was lying and killed…
