The need for Food
There are 3 main types of food: carbohydrates, proteins and fats. * Carbohydrates and fats are both required for sources of energy. * Proteins are needed for growth and for repair or worn out tissues.
Digestion is the process of breaking down large, insoluble food particles into smaller, soluble particles. This means they are small enough to pass through the wall of the small intestine and to dissolve into the blood. Different mammals eat different types of foods: * Herbivores eat only plant material; sheep and cattle are herbivores. * Carnivores eat only animal materials; dogs and tigers are carnivores. * Omnivores eat both plant and animal material ; humans are omnivores.
Herbivore teeth function.
Incisors: These are not present on the top jaw of sheep. Lower incisors have sharp edges which cut grass against the horny pad on the top jaw.
Canines: These are not present on the top jaw. The lower canines look and act like incisors.
Premolars and molars: These have ridges which fit close together to grind grass. Carnivore teeth function.
Incisors: These are small sharp teeth which pull and scrape meat from bones.
Canines: These are long and pointed to kill prey. They are then used to grip and tear flesh.
Premolars and molars: These have sharp edges which slice flesh.

Omnivore teeth function.
Incisors: These have sharp straight edges for cutting food.
Canines: These are pointed and used to grip tough food.
Premolars and molars: These are wide teeth which crush food between them.

Enzymes are chemicals which speed up biological reactions. Digestion involves several enzymes involved in the breakdown food: * Protease are enzymes used to break down protein. * Amylase are enzymes used to break down carbohydrates. * Lipase are enzymes used to break down fat.
The small intestine is long and its inner surface is

The gastrointestinal tract starts with the mouth, which leads to the gullet via the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and ends at the anus. In due course of the journey, the ingested food is broken down by both physical and chemical means to release nutrients which are absorbed into the blood stream. The ingested food is physically broken down in the mouth by chewing so as to reduce its size for increased surface area over which enzymatic reaction will take place. Enzymatic reaction is known as digestion and this is defined as the chemical breakdown of the ingested complex food molecules by the action of biological enzymes, into simplest form that can be absorbed into the blood stream and assimilated into living cells. In human beings, various components of the ingested food are digested and absorbed at various sections of the alimentary canal .…

The digestive system is the physical ad chemical breakdown of food. Following ingestion, food and fluids are processed by the digestive organs so that nutrients can be absorbed from the intestines and circulated around the body. Any residue of food that is not digested is solidified and eliminated from the body in the form of feces. (P.207)…

Enzymes are proteins that are involved in all the chemical processes in living things. As they are made of proteins they are affected by pH and temperature. Enzymes are catalysts; they speed up chemical reactions without being changed themselves. Digestive enzymes speed up the breakdown of large food molecules into smaller ones so that the blood can absorb them. Enzymes turn a large starch molecule into thousands of tiny glucose molecules. Enzymes end in 'ase'. There are thousands of enzymes in our body but each enzyme is only specialised to do one thing, for example carbohydraise enzymes digest carbohydrates, protease enzymes digest protein.…
