American Dream In The Great Gatsby And A Streetcar Named Desire
Everyone wants to be happy. Some people will travel across the sea and leave their home and family in search for happiness. They will throw away everything they have in order to attain something that, during the moment, seems like the perfect solution to all of their questions. Jay Gatsby and Blanche Dubois in The Great Gatsby and A Streetcar Named Desire, respectfully, give away everything they have in order to attain what they believe to be the ultimate form of happiness: the American Dream

Blanche is a protagonist who tries to repeat the past by filling up the desire that she has for being with a man like her past husband Allen Gray. Blanche has a strong relationship with Mitch. However, Blanche creates a fake identity by covering up her imperfections and her unfaithful past and she spontaneously deceives Mitch and he is instantly drawn to her. Nevertheless, both Mitch and Banche have a desire of wanting someone to fill up the loneliness that is within them to make up for the loss of their past loved ones. As the play progresses, Mitch was deceived to think that Blanche was the perfect one to bring home to his sick mother. However, little did he know that Blanche had a horrifying history. Her decisiveness led to the downfall of her marriage with Mitch. At this point, Mitch realizes that Blanche has been deceiving him for the whole time and that she is not worthy enough to be called his wife. Mitch says, “ I don’t think I want to marry you anymore… you’re not clean enough to bring in the house with my mother” (Williams 121). This statement illuminates that Mitch was hurt by the fake role that Blanche was playing all along and that he put his hopes in someone who was never worth it. In addition, she deceived Mitch into believing that she is a clean and modest women who has abnegated herself
