The Demons Inside:Analysis of “Demons” by Imagine Dragons
In the song “Demons” by Imagine Dragons a man sings about a beast inside him. This man is having a hard time as the things that he looks up to betray him and his dreams disappear. The beast inside this man is portrayed as his emotions. The hurt that he feels, and the loneliness he feels can be seen through the words he uses in this song. The speaker in “Demons” is an ordinary man but his dreams were crushed and all of his role models end up to be the worst people he knew.He is a very literate person hinting that he has gotten an education of some sort. The loneliness he feels is caused by himself. The speaker pushes everyone away from him because of these demons and beasts that are inside of him. He keeps on saying that “It's dark inside”(10). This darkness is the loneliness that he is feeling. He has no one to help him through his hardships and as a result he feels dark inside. He repeats this several times and it adds to the sadness of this song. Whenever he looks at the one he loves he comments on the fact that this person has ”eyes, they shine so bright…”(12). These eyes contrast to the darkness that he feels inside of him. The brightness he feels is the friendliness that is being projected towards him. This person that he appreciates is helping the speaker without the speaker even realizing the help that has been given. Just looking at this other person gives the Narrator good vibes but in the end he advises this narrator to stay away from him. For this reason he can not help himself. He says that “the days are cold”(1). He could solve this easily by putting a jacket or a coat on. He keeps on saying that it is up to fate to and since everything is up to fate, people can not change the outcome. If he had put on something to warm himself up, he would have already changed something. He feels that “...the ones we hail / are the worst of all”(2). In a way he already looks up to someone that does not fit this description. The person who makes him feel worth like something is the one other person mentioned in this song. As he is wallowing in the darkness inside him, the person who he cherishes gives him a light. If the speaker had changed his perspective, then his troubles would not be as bad as they are now. But since he adopts a negative tone in the song, it helps with the sorrowful tone of the
