Angels & Demons - 1

THEO 104-D48
Reflection Paper
Introduction
Angels are many times presented as being dressed in white flowing robes with halos and wings. They are usually depicted with long flowing hair and surrounded by bright white light. It is not unusual to see angels presented in movies, television and literature as taking human form and assisting people by performing various supernatural acts, such as flying or performing miracles. Angels are almost always presented as good and peaceful beings having been sent by God to assist humankind. These representations many times do not agree with scripture, but the overwhelming popularity of angels in our culture is undeniable. Demons, on the other hand, seem to be a topic that many refuse to even mention. By refusing to talk about them, we can’t be educated about them. By ignoring them, we can’t recognize if we are dealing with them. If we never talk about them, we are saying that they don’t exist, or they are not relevant. In addition, if we do not address these spiritual bieing and only talk about Satan, then we might communicate a messge that Satan is far more powerful than he reallyis. They are usually depicted as very evil creatures sent to inhibit or harm humankind. It is very rare to see demons represented in any way shape or form as good or beneficial.
Part One According to the Bible, angels are heavenly beings that were at some point created by God. Evidently, they are sent by God to deliver messages, praise God on His throne, or carry out God’s will. They are mentioned numerous times in both the New testament as well as the Old Testament. There have been numerous stories about angels, and virtually every child has at one point or another heard about their guardian angel. It seems that a day does not go by without hearing some sort of a story whereby someone was helped in one way or another by a supernatural creature that most recognize as angelic. The point is that the

A second way demon might distract us from God in a way to have us justify our distraction is fear of ridicule. Suppressing and in turn being ashamed of our religion may seem reasonable and harmless at first but it actually is highly destructive towards our faith. If we are ashamed of our faith we are essentially turning away from God while these demons are exploiting our insecurities and fears to look…

Soto gives this repetition of angels as a tool to indicate his own take on religion while deceivingly making a child’s perspective merely a mask. He elaborates the bond with himself and angels like a child would; using such words as “flopping”. He offers only a youthful outlook on how to interpret the presence of God by using the examples of “God howling in the plumbing underneath the house…” and “I knew an apple got Eve into deep trouble…” as if he was aware of who the divine is but he isn’t completely sure on how to explain God other than as he pictures God or…

some of those thoughts can have some truth to them some may be clouded or misled. Some of those people's judgements can be swayed depending on the amount of reputation a certain place has or the reputation that a very influential person has given it. In “The Very Old Man With Enormous wings” The priest, Father Gonzaga, makes no statement, whether it is an angel or not. The father reminds the town folk “that the devil had a bad habit of making use of carnival tricks to confuse the unwary… that wings were not an essential element… in the recognition of angels”(Marquez 2). This means that they should be careful where or in what they put their faith in. It later states that “his prudence fell on sterile hearts,” which means that they no longer have a regard for what he says. This is because of the preset image of what an angel is supposed to look like, a human body form with large wings. They see this thing that look like what they envision an angel to be and won't hear out the outer…

They were brought through the tunnels, which glistened and shone with every step they took. When they finally got out of the tunnels, they were greeted by a city covered in a pure gold coat. It shone even more than any regular gold you normally see. They kept walking, and soon came across a certain building that was taller than the rest. It had a large spire on the top, inside which was a large crystal that shone with the light of a thousand suns. When they stepped inside, it was completely empty except for a long hallway with a large double door at the end of it. It took what felt like an eternity to walk down the hallway, in which they were constantly being poked by the guard’s spears. Eventually they made it to the end and the other angels disappeared into thin air and reappeared at the other end of the…

In the hymn A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, written by Martin Luther, a sense of acknowledgement of the devil is quite evident. The people of this hymn’s era had an understanding that there were evil forces that did not coincide with their heavenly father. “And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, We will not fear , for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us.” So because these people had an understanding, or rather an acknowledgement that there were devils (witches/demons/sorcerers) in their mist it became natural to draw attention to the issue. Once the attention is drawn, people start to become preoccupied; hence the literature, songs, and beliefs about the devil. Another way to become preoccupied or to portray evidence that interest is being shown is for one to begin to compare or give titles. Throughout the hymn Luther threw in some startling titles of the devil that might have been commonly used in his era. Such include the prince of darkness, evil force, and the ancient foe. These titles are all examples that the people of this era are indeed giving interest to the devil, just as they would give God titles and attention to.…

    The Hierarchy Of Angels

A hierarchy of angels is a belief or tradition found in the angelology of different religions, which holds that there are different levels or ranks of angels. Higher ranks may be asserted to have greater power or authority over lower ranks, and with different ranks having differences in appearance, such as varying numbers of wings or faces. There have been many accounts of people actually saying that they have a spiritual being guiding them and helping them. A person that is well known in history that said they had a spiritual being with them is George Washington. He even credited his success at Valley Forge to “an inspiring visit from a heavenly being.” Another person well known in history that spoke of angels is Abraham Lincoln. He often called upon the healing powers and wisdom of the Angels to help guide him and heal the nation in times of death and devastation. Of course all of this is up to belief it shows that it may not be real but if you believe things can go right. If you ask the angels for help to get through something, you need to believe they will help you and you need to believe in yourself as well. They aren’t doing all of it. You are doing the work too.…

The religious concept of the Devil has faced numerous changes by society through different interpretations and representation to create new modernized ideas of what the Devil really is. This Devil originating from biblical teachings still holds value in society today, but it has also been changed to fit our own personal satisfying definitions that change from person to person, with many of these definitions sharing the same basic core beliefs. These different beliefs range from religious values, to cultural standards set by media outlets and everyday life.
