Brian Duhaime Assignment 6 Final draft 10-12-11

Appearance: Does it Really Tell the Truth?
We’ve all done it, desired something based solely on its looks only to find out that “All that glitters is not gold.” The age old phrase tells us that first impressions, in many cases, can be deceptive. Wanting something simply for its outward appearance can result in misfortune and disappointment. Be wary of what the eyes want because the appearance of material things, marketing appeal and yes, even people, generally mask what the true reality is.

Many people use the common expression but have no idea where it originates or what it means. Records claim it was the French theologian, Alain de Lille, who said “Do not hold as gold all that shines like gold” in the 12th century. This phrase was changed to read “all that glisters is not gold” and used in William Shakespeare’s literary work The Merchant of Venice written in 1596. Variations have since been used in other writings such as: Tragic Tales by George Tuberville, The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien and Don Quixote by Cervantes. With the evolution of the English language the quote has been modified to its present form, “All that glitters is not gold.” When we look at the quote we can surmise that, just because something looks and glitters like gold that it actually is gold. More simply put, not everything that is appealing is what it seems to be.

Objects that attract the eye may be mis-leading without knowing the true nature of the item. Something commonly seen, such as the Solanum xanti, or Purple Nightshade flower, is beautiful look at. The vibrant, deep purple and pearl white petals will draw you in. But be warned, this flower is poisonous. It causes painful burns and can be deadly to humans. It is a stunning flower which hides a dangerous secret. In comparison, a gold ring is only a gold ring if it is made entirely of gold; otherwise it is not what it appears to truly

When the first settlers came to America many years ago, they found freedom and opportunity. With hard work and determination an average man or woman could be prosperous. This concept was not only revolutionary in theory, but has proven to be true for many successful individuals. This idea has come to be known as the ‘American Dream.’ Its foundation was based on good ethics; however, with the passing of time it has become distorted. The American Dream no longer stands for equal opportunity and hard work, it involves wealth, false happiness, materialistic possessions and high social status. Individuals who have achieved the materialistic ‘American Dream’ give the appearance of perfection. However, for many, their lives are not as ideal as what they seem. Issues such as sexual abuse, mental illness, alcoholism, adultery, greed and restlessness, affect the lives of even those who appear to live the ‘American Dream.’ In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novels The Great Gatsby and Tender is the Night, the characters Daisy Buchanan and Nicole Diver give the appearance of a charmed existence, but it is in fact flawed.…

Here’s something to think about. Have you ever been competing for something such as a job and wondered what made you lose to your competitor? Your first instinct would probably be that they have more intelligence or are more experienced and knowledgeable but what it that wasn’t the reason? Maybe, it had nothing to do with any of that. Maybe it had to do with your sex orientation or color of your skin, or even the quality of your clothes. In our society, appearance has always been taken into affect when it comes to making decisions. Although it may be unfair, the way you look can either increase or decrease your chances or succeeding or failing in this world. In fact, appearance has been crucial for years now and will most likely continue into the future. In the poem, “Pet Fly” by Walter Mosley, there are many examples of how ones appearance truly affects them. In this poem, there are four particular employees who work at the same office but on different floor levels based on their appearances: Rufus Coombs, Mr. Averill, Ernie, and Mona Donelli.…

    Beauty Is Subjective

It is often said that "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and this goes to prove that beauty is highly subjective. We all obviously have different tastes. What appears beautiful to one person may seem ugly or not so beautiful to another. It is the person who is looking (the beholder) who has to form his or her own opinion whether a particular person, place or object is beautiful. Many literary researchers believe that Margaret Wolfe Hungerford (née Hamilton), who wrote prolifically under the pseudonym 'The Duchess' was the first person ever to write "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". In her book Molly Bawn written in 1878, the line "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” appears for the first time in print.…
