Art Observation
“Ring!” I immediately rose from my chair at the lunch table and started hustling out the cafeteria doors to my next class, art. That was the class I looked forward to everyday. Creating art and observing art is my way to escape ordinary life at school. While I paint, I become completely absorbed into my inner world and able to express my thoughts and feelings on paper. However, before the class begins to create artwork, the art teacher assigns us a task and certain technique to practice in our art. Today, the teacher assigned us to include perspective into our drawings.

I set up my easel and canvas parallel to the person sitting across from me and, falling back into my chair, started diligently working on my painting. Initially, I drew a horizontal and vertical line that were perpendicular to each other in order to define the horizon. Doing so, also allowed me to mark the vanishing point where the two lines intersected. Finally, I added extra lines that provided a guide to how the one-point perspective would function in the drawing. To do this, I visually calculated the slopes of the lines and visualized where they would intercept the initial horizontal and vertical lines I drew. After completing the guide lines, I started sketching the scene. By the time the class ended, I was finished drawing out the trail and the forest. The next class, I would be able to start painting.
Finally, the next day rolled along and I continued working on the painting during art class. Examining the supply of paints, I carefully chose the perfect colors for my painting. While most students collected pants of black, white, gray, and various hues of brown paints, I gathered rich, green and earthy
