I. Term Paper - Basics
A. Purpose: It is intended to develop ability to analyze a work of art and employ critical thinking and written communication skills.
B. It combines background research with personal visual analysis of an art object. (See Basic Guide to Analyze Works of Art on Blackboard).
C. Note some objects in the museum similar to the ones we study and appear similar, not identical. (The illustrations in the text can serve as helpful comparisons, but don’t make the mistake of writing the paper on the figure in our text since they differ in significant details to the examples in the museum).

III. Include your own personal visual analysis of the work
A. A visual analysis analyzes how the artist has used the visual elements of art (color, form, line, space, texture, light, composition) to achieve the appearance and message of his/her work. (See Basic Guide to Analyze Works of Art on …show more content…
What ideas are communicated by the object? (For instance does a crucifix evoke empathy for Christ’s suffering or does it celebrate his triumph over death? How are various visual elements and compositional devices employed by the artist to convey this impression?).

A.3. Explain the ideas communicated via this visual means.
A.4. Discuss only visual elements and compositional design elements that are relevant to your object.
B. Consider how the form of the work is related to its purpose in society (i.e. connected with burial rituals, to arouse devotion, to glorify a ruler, etc.).
IV. Emphasis should be given to your own analysis of the work.
A. Your background research should help you better understand the artist 's or the culture 's particular use of the visual elements.
B. How does the use of these elements reflect the ideas of the period?
