Performance Appraisal of Indian Public Sector Banks
Parvesh Kumar Aspal * and Naresh Malhotra**
The strength of economy of any country basically hinges on the strength and efficiency of financial system, which, in turn, depends upon a sound banking system. The regulators have recommended bank’s supervision through CAMEL rating model to assess the performance of banks, which is better than the earlier systems.
The prime objective of CAMEL model of rating banking institutions is to make their comparative performance analysis. It is basically a ratio based model for evaluating the performance of banks. The basic purpose of the present study is to evaluate the financial performance of Indian public sector banks excluding State Bank
Group for the period of 2007-11. The study found that Bank of
Baroda was at the first position with overall composite ranking average of 6.05 due to its better performance in the areas of liquidity and asset quality, closely followed by Andhra Bank with average of 6.15 because of its strength in the spheres of management efficiency, capital adequacy and asset quality. United
Bank of India holds the bottom most rank with average of 14.60 due to management inefficiency, poor assets and earning quality.
The study recommends that United Bank of India has to improve its management efficiency, assets and earning quality. Similarly
Bank of Maharashtra should improve its liquidity position and management efficiency.

This thesis consists of two chapters that investigate two important issues in banking of the past decade: the effect of banking consolidation on the borrowers and the regulatory capital requirements for banks. The first chapter analyzes the effect of bank mergers on loan prices, and the welfare implications for borrowers. In particular I test the hypothesis that mergers create efficiency gains which are, in fact, passed on to borrowers through a reduction in interest rates. The alternative hypothesis is that mergers lead to greater market concentration and in turn an increase in the cost of capital for borrowers. Using a proprietary loan-level data set for U.S. commercial banks, I find that acquiring banks, on average, reduce the spreads on their new commercial and industrial loans after a merger. The reduction in loan spreads is both larger and also more persistent for the smaller acquirers, with total gross assets less than $10 billion. These findings seem to be driven by cost efficiencies due to mergers, since the results are stronger for the sample of acquirers with larger than median declines in their operating costs after their mergers. Moreover, the reduction in spreads is much larger if the acquirer and the target have some geographical overlap of markets before the merger, and, consequently, more potential for…

The brand has relied on its healthy share of the market since its inception in 1998 and has recently become the sales leader in the country. The definition of Asymmetric Information involves two parties, and which one party has more superior information and normally will not disclose the truth or harmful situation of a transaction to another party. The financial system—the collection of markets, institutions, laws, regulations, and techniques through which bonds, stocks, and other securities are traded, interest rates are determined, and financial services are produced and delivered around the world. The financial system is one of the most important creations of modern society. Its primary task is to move scarce loanable funds from those who save to those who borrow to buy goods and services and to make investments in new equipment and facilities so that the global economy can grow and increase the standard of living enjoyed by its citizens. Without the global financial system and the loanable funds it supplies, each of us would lead a much less enjoyable existence.…
