Those two skills, respectively, allow you to report the ideas of others concisely and to relate the information found in several sources to one another. In critiquing a source, you evaluate the validity of an author 's ideas and the overall persuasiveness of the author’s argument. Use your summarizing skills to paraphrase the central ideas found in your source text, and clearly express…

Welcome to WritePoint, the automated review system that recognizes errors most commonly made by university students in academic essays. The system embeds comments into your paper and suggests possible changes in grammar and style. Please evaluate each comment carefully to ensure that the suggested change is appropriate for your paper, but remember that your instructor 's preferences for style and format prevail. You will also need to review your own citations and references since WritePoint capability in this area is limited. NOTE: WritePoint comments are computer-generated writing and grammar suggestions inviting the consideration and analysis of the writer; they are not infallible statements of right/wrong, and they should not be used as grading elements. Also, at present, WritePoint cannot detect quotations or block-quotes, so comments in those areas should be ignored. Please see the other helpful writing resources in the Tutorials and Guides section of the Center for Writing Excellence. Thank you for using WritePoint.…

In the essay “Be Cool to the Pizza Dude,” author Sarah Adams explains how being cool to the pizza dude will essentially result in good karma in the future. First, she gives the first principle saying that being cool to the pizza dude is a “practice in humility and forgiveness”. The author goes on to illustrate a situation of how the pizza guy cut her off, didn’t blinker, etc. while zooming passed her. Next, she reinforces her belief by saying the pizza dude brings everyone together. In Principle 2, she says that it is a “practice in empathy”. Then, she explains how everyone has taken jobs just for the money. Adams metaphorically compares life to a pizza by saying “In the big pizza wheel of life, sometimes you’re the hot bubbly cheese and sometimes you’re the burnt crust” (“Be Cool to the Pizza Dude” 1). Principle 3 is a “practice in honor”. She presents that pizza delivery guys aren’t CEO’s or anything like that. Lastly, Principle 4 is a “practice in equality”. The author explains everyone is equal because of the kindness in our hearts. To conclude, Adams suggests being nice to the pizza dude, because good karma will return.…

The first book I selected to read for this assignment was “The Girl I Left Behind: A Narrative History of the Sixties” by Judith Nies and published by HarperCollins Publishers Inc. in 2008. The book is an autobiographical history of the authors personal and professional experiences. Judith Nies is a feminist activist and has spent much of her adult life promoting equal rights for women. She is a graduate of John Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and has written several books and many articles appearing in such magazines and newspapers as the New York Times, the Boston Globe, the Christian Science Monitor, Ms., the Harvard Review, and other publications. The second book I selected is also an autobiography “My American Journey” by Colin Powell with Joseph E. Persico. It was published by Ballantine Books in 1996. Colin Powell is a former Secretary of State and a retired four-star general in the United States Army. He was Secretary of State under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005. He was the first African American to serve in that position. During his military career, Powell also served as National Security Advisor (1987–1989), as Commander of the U.S. Army Forces Command (1989) and as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989–1993), holding the latter position during the Persian Gulf War. He was the first, and so far the only, African American to serve on…

Critical thinking skills are a very important part of graduate writing. Critical thinking allows the writer to see all the different sides of the argument. The writer will question any assumptions that are made all while avoiding the use of commonplaces. The writer, according to "Graduate Level Writing" (2011*2014) “develops a clear argument from the available literature on the subject. This type of writing always establishes a purpose while addressing a specific audience. Often, graduate level writing also provides suggestions for further research and development beyond the limits of the course assignment”.…

As a young child, I was always aware of books and the difference between books for children and books for adults. I would not say that I grew up in a family of devout readers, but I did grow up in a family of individuals who appreciated the value of books. Although my parents never seemed to have time to simply sit and read frequently, my mother had engaged with college-level texts in her adulthood, and both of my parents saw the benefit of exposing my sister and me to books at an early age. There was always a bookshelf in my house packed full of textbooks and enormous tomes with dusty, creased spines. We also had a full set of the Encyclopedia Britannica (which I recently found out is going out of print). It would be an exaggeration to say that these books intrigued me because they represented knowledge. However, they intrigued me because although they sat there and collected dust for years, my mother refused to throw them away. It was impressed upon me very early on that books were important, and that throwing them away was wrong. I did not get it completely at that point, especially because those books were incomprehensible to a four or five year old, but I understood that it was something that would be important when I was older.…

Since day one that I can remember, my parents have always been divorced. Sometimes it became a big problem in our family because of the constant arguments between them. The court felt it wasn’t fair for my brothers and I and came to the conclusion that the children will see a counselor one a week. At that time I was so young I didn’t know exactly what that meant and apparently had no other choice but to go. Little did I know that it would change my perception forever.…

In my life I have never had any political enforcement or strict religious influence. My parents were very lenient when it came too political preaching. I was taught to be a caring and respectful individual. My political understanding and beliefs have been molded from my early political memories and socialization experiences. As a young adult I have always strived to become knowledgeable about political ideals mainly because I was never really taught to believe in something specific. I eventually was drawn towards many different social and political perspectives, which is how I came to a logical conclusion of how I view the world politically today. I have established a solid although ever evolving conceptualization of politics and society due to my family's influence and my early high school political experience.…
