Bless Me Ultima
Antonio’s Growing Up In the novel, Bless Me Ultima, Antonio Marez has personal endeavors that provide him with his outlook on life. The author, Rudolfo Anaya sets this up beautifully by putting the protagonist, Antonio, through a riveting and exciting plot. In the novel, Antonio Marez has multiple exposures of maturity, such as being raised in a rural area, experiencing death firsthand, and learning the act of forgiveness. An experience that gives Antonio a different outlook on life is being raised in Guadalupe. Growing up in this rural area has put him very close to nature and the land. This shapes his outlook on life because it connects him to his family, since his uncles are very close to the land. This also makes Antonio more mature because it develops a love and respect for the land. Being raised in Guadalupe also sets up a distinctive perception for Antonio because he lives in a middle class environment. For example, in Antonio’s household his father and mother both work hard and Antonio is given chores and discipline. This shapes his maturity because it does not make him spoiled or self-indulgent. It also builds his character because it makes him work hard to accomplish his goals. Another experience that shapes the maturity of Antonio is witnessing death firsthand. Seeing Narciso or Ultima die in front of his eyes leaves Antonio with a severe and grueling scene. This definitely changes his outlook on life because it exposes him to the evil of Tenerio. It also is a key moment for Antonio because it shows him that there is tragedy and death in this world. Experiencing death directly is tragic for anyone but to experience it at the age Antonio did is horrific. I say this because most people in their lives, let alone children, ever see death unfold before their eyes. This gives Antonio an altered form of maturity to his peers because more than likely none of them has had to go through what Antonio did. This also takes away some of the happiness and

Study Question 5. In the novel -- Bless Me, Ultima -- written by Rudolfo Anaya, the events are set during and after World War II. Rather than being significant to the story, this particular moment in history takes more significance in the molding of the characters which eventually drives the story. In the text it says, “The men of the town had murdered Lupito. But he had murdered the sheriff. They said the war had made him crazy” (24). As read in the quote, World War II directly affected those immediately involved in the war, for instance, Lupito. However, it also indirectly affected young Antonio, due to the impact left on the people Antonio was exposed to. Being exposed to these people, Antonio witnessed events that made him develop his own…

Now that I have finished the novel my thoughts are directed towards the ending realization of Antonio’s perspectives and how Ultima faded from life. I thought the conversation between Antonio and his father during the car ride was quite interesting with the resolution of Antonio at last finding a way to forge himself from all perspectives. I liked how Gabriel explained how people can only understand for themselves from life experiences. I agree that we truly understand life from experiences and cannot understand just by what someone else tells us such as Antonio’s parents telling him there indifferent perspectives thinking he would understand. In the final chapter when Ultima is lying on her bed gradually fading from life after the murder…

    Bless Me Ultima - Tony

Blood becomes the river. The human race dies and only the "she-goats and the he-goats" remain (176). The lake "cracked with laughter of madness" and the "ghosts stood and walked upon the shore" (120). Who dares dream such gruesome images? Only Antonio Marez. He argues with God and the Virgin Mary. He commutes with the dead; the dead asks him for blessings. Just who is this Tony person! You might not believe that this is only a seven year old kid, but he is the hero of Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima. Tony is valiant, and this courage sometimes reflects his curiously precocious nature. Precocious he is, he still is in constant mental ambivalence.

When I say Tony is brave, I don't mean that he fights demons or kill dragons, but rather that he stands for what he believe is right and he is not afraid to go to extreme measures to protect the people he love. He shows that he is a "man of the llano" when he "does[n't] run from a fight" even when confronted with Horse, the notorious bully (37). Tony also stands up against a mob for Florence; everyone wants to punish Florence for "not believing in God" (214) and Tony pushes the crowd away and refuses to give Florence the penance that Florence does not deserve. Although Tony knows that he will be given the "Indian torture" (214), he still speaks up for his friend. Anaya often presents Tony as a dependent character, never wanting to "be away from the protection of [his] mother" (51); in fact, he's so close to his mother that it seems that he's going through Oedipus's Complex. Anaya actually does this to increase the impact of Tony's bravery. One might expect Tony to stay in his undercover bushes when Tenorio is standing so close; however, when Tony hears that Tenorio knows the way to kill Ultima, the thought to warn Ultima supercedes his fear and encourages his legs to pick up and run home (255). At trying times, he "stood by Ultima" and "would have slashed out to protect Ultima" (138).

Oftentimes, Tony's…
