Boston Beer Company
Boston Beer Company- Case Analysis
You are the investment banker assigned with the task of setting the IPO price for Boston Beer Company (BBC). Prepare a research report to support your recommendation. As you prepare this report, you may find that you would like to have more field information than what the case offers you. However, the case contains critical information that gives you a reasonable basis to compute its valuation. In addition use the following information for 1995.1 Sales ($ millions) Redhook Pete’s BBC 25.89 59.17 151.31 EPS .75 .25 .40 Book value/share 7.70 4.33 3.00 Price 27.00 24.75 ?

Also, use the following information for BBC for 1996. Make additional assumptions as necessary (and state any additional assumptions) to compute free cash flows for subsequent years: 1. The ratio of Net profit before taxes to sales is 12%. 2. Tax rate is 35% 3. For every dollar of increased sales BBC will increase working capital by 15% (or working capital will increase by $0.15 for every dollar of increased sales) 4. Capex is 2% of sales 5. Depreciation is 2% of sales 6. BBC’s beta is 1.2. Use BBC’s cost of equity as its WACC since its debt is a trivial part of its capital structure. 7. Analysts’ growth forecast for BBC and for the craft brewing segment in general is 30% per year over the next five years. Present the following: 1. Overview of the industry – competitive landscape, expected short-term and longterm industry growth, key players in the industry. Summarize the key facts from the case in about one to two paragraphs. Identify the closest peers to BBC. • Also, present as separate analysis of the relative growth of the craft brewing segment. Suppose the craft brewing segment grows at 30% per year for the next five years. What would be the % share (as a % of barrels sold) of the craft brewing segment in the beer industry? What would be the % share of the craft brewing segment if this segment grows at a 30% per year rate for the next 10 years? How do you

Ranked #4 during the 2010 US Open Beer Championship and consistently ranked in the top 10 of brewing competitions, Samuel Adams Boston Lager is the flagship beer of The Boston Beer Company. Although the Boston Beer Company was founded in 1984, the roots of the Samuel Adams Boston Lager are over 100 years old beginning with James Koch’s great-great grandfather’s family recipe. As a result of the Industrial Revolution, small regional brewers, like James Koch’s great-great grandfather’s, struggled due to increasing competition. In 1984, Jim Koch resurrected his family recipe and produced the first batch of Samuel Adams Boston Lager in his kitchen.…

1a. There are several reasons BBC should focus on the light beer market. It is true that their sales were decreasing from year to year but I think there is nothing wrong with the product itself. The problem is on the marketing and management system. It was proved from the result of the consumer taste survey. Most of people said that lightship beer had better taste, better color and smell compare to Bud light, Coors Light, and Amstel Light and the result stated that lightship beer was in the first place. We got almost the same result from the blind test that is held in several countries including USA and Canada. Another important reason is the demand for the light beer is relative high from the consumers. People said that the advantage of drinking light beer because it contains lower calorie. Based on the field study, light beers accounted for five of the top ten best-selling beers in supermarkets. So, it is very pity if BBC stops producing light beer.…

Overview The Boston Beer Company has had amazing success in its transition from a small scale microbrewer to a large scale national brewery. Almost all of the company’s success is due to the Samuel Adams Lager product line, which has hardly changed from the founding of the company in 1984, to the IPO in 1995, to the present day. In fact, much of the appeal of Samuel Adams comes from its microbrew image and the founder, Jim Koch’s, commitment to the brewing process and a premium beer. In recent years, however, the company has implemented a new strategy for growth which has included introducing a light beer that will have more mainstream appeal. While this has increased profits for the company, it has also left the company vulnerable to entry by diluting its brand name. For this reason, the company’s strategy for the immediate future has to make a significant shift, from a strategy of growth to a strategy of protection. It must focus on maintaining its current profits by preventing entry both from small breweries looking to copy the BBC’s strategy and from large breweries looking to use their expansive resources to steal some of BBC’s market share.…

Second, you should try to justify this price per share by doing FCF analysis. Create a ten year pro-forma spreadsheet, projecting out barrels of beer each year, revenue per barrel, revenue, costs, taxes, etc. Calculate net income, then subtract out net investments and add back depreciation to obtain FCF each year. Don't forget to calculate terminal value at the end of 10 years. Use a 4% growth rate after year 10. Calculate the cost of equity and then discount the free cash flows by this discount rate. Calculate the Present Value of these FCFs plus the present value of the terminal value. To find the implied price, divide this present value by the new # shares outstanding,…

Anheuser-Busch first got its start in 1860 when Eberhard Anheuser bought the struggling Bavarian Brewery in St. Louis, Missouri. Eberhard lacked the experience in the brewing industry, but luckily, his son-in-law Adolphus Busch was a young brewery supplier with great knowledge in the brewing industry. In 1864 Adolphus and Eberhard became partners and started to brew a variety of beers to satisfy the tastes of a growing and diverse nation. This small brewery soon grew into a great brewing empire that we now know today as Anheuser-Busch.…

New Belgium Brewing Company is working to address several environmental issues, including the usage of non-renewable energy sources, the treatment of waste water, using and wasting less fresh water, and the recycling of as much of the firm’s waste as possible. NBB is the first brewery in the United States to be fully wind-powered, and they encourage their employees and the communities they serve to bike wherever they go, rather than drive. These efforts, along with the planning of opening a new factory to improve logistics of production and distribution, are aimed to help reduce the usage of fossil fuels for energy, and thereby reducing their carbon footprint. The company uses a system to capture its wastewater and extract methane. This takes some pressure off of the local water treatment facility, as well as providing some power for the brewery itself. The process New Belgium uses to make its beer uses only 3.9 gallons of water to make 1 gallon of beer, while typical companies brew using 4.875 gallons. This twenty percent reduction in water usage adds up quickly to an abundance of water conservation. NBB recycles its cardboard boxes, keg caps, office materials, the amber glass used in bottling, and its wastewater, resulting in ninety-five percent of its total waste being recycled.…

Boston Beer’s sales performance triumphs over its leading two competitors, Redhook Ale Brewery and Pete’s Brewing Company. As seen in the table (appendix 1), BBC achieved net sales of $114,833,000 in the year ending 31 December 1994. This was a growth of 48.84% from the previous year, compared to Redhook’s 30% growth in net sales to $14,929,000 and Pete’s striking growth of 152.02% to net sales of $30,837,000. Pete’s impressive growth in net sales is evidently the greatest by far, however it does not compare as its net sales is only 26.84% of BBC’s.…

MMBC is considering introducing a Mountain Man Light beer to attract younger drinkers to the brand. MMBC ultimately would like to reposition the brand to drive sales of Mountain Man Light to young people without eroding the core brand equity. The reason MMBC should consider doing this is because over the previous six years light beer sales in the U.S have been growing at a compound annual rate of 4% while traditional beer sales have been declining annually at the same rate. MMBC has been experiencing declining sales for the first time in the company’s history and needs to do something about it.…

Sales growth: Given the Body Shop’s growth level of 20% in the early 1990’s and its newly implemented strategy, it is assumed that the Body Shop will be able to sustain a relatively high growth rate in the future years, however the Body it will not be able to generate sales growth at the early 1990’s level due to increased competition in the market. In 2000 the sales increased by 8.7 % and in 2001 it increased by 13.3% The Body Shop’s sales are forecasted to increase by 11 % per year in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Thus, it is assumed that the past years trend of increasing sales growth will continue until 2004, however at a steady rate of 11 % per year, which is the average of the past two years growth rate.…

Mr. Prangel as we all know Mountain Man Beer Company has been in the market over eight decades; manufacturing a beer known for its authenticity, quality and toughness. In all these years we have seen many regional breweries vanished by fatal decisions. Mountain Man Beer Company is still standing strong in the market, yet it has come the time to make a crucial decision regarding the future of our company. Before I present my recommendation I would like you to know that I am well aware of your father’s words when he talks about the company, when he says that “Mountain Man is still standing because we manufacture and exceptional beer with a great brand name, we have never lost sight of our core customer, and we have never been seduced by the other guy’s market”. Unfortunately due to changes in beer drinkers’ preferences and declines in sales for the first year, we need to consider different options to compensate for potential declines in sales in the coming years.…
