Purpose:

Recognize the possible dangers of household pollutants.
Use the scientific method to design an experiment to test chemical pollutants.
Measure the effect of various toxic materials on brine shrimp.
Measure using scientific units.
Operate scientific equipment.
Practice basic laboratory safety.
Conduct a scientific investigation as a team.
Learn about the basic biology of brine shrimp.

Hypothesis
In this lab I hypothesize that the most lethal household chemical is bleach and that is has the lowest LD50.

Materials:

1000 ml beaker/2 gallon tank air pump air stone tubing eye droppers 10 ml pipettes graduated cylinders small petri dishes dissecting scopes/hand lenses beakers stopwatch live brine shrimp
Lysol
Bleach vinegar acetone (nail polish remover)

Procedures:
Place live brine shrimp in a small aquarium tank or a 1000ml beaker with an aerator.
Place 2 petri dishes at each lab table. Three tables will be working on sample A and the other half working on sample B.
Label each dish . For example at lab table #1 there would be one dish labeled 5% and one labeled 10% for sample A and at lab table #2 there would be one dish labeled 20%

and 30% for sample A and so on for the 40% and 50%. At the other lab tables you would label the dishes for sample B.
The setup would appear as below. Lab table #1 Lab table #2 Lab table #3
Sample A
Dish 1 = 5%
Dish 2 = 10% Sample A
Dish 3 = 20%
Dish 4 = 30% Sample A
Dish 5 = 40%
Dish 6 = 50% Lab table #4 Lab table #5 Lab table #6
Sample B
Dish 1 = 5%
Dish 2 = 10% Sample B
Dish 3 = 20%
Dish 4 = 30% Sample B
Dish 5 = 40%
Dish 6 = 50% Add the following to each plate:
5% = 9.5 ml of brine shrimp water + 10 living brine shrimp
10% = 9 ml of brine shrimp water + 10 living brine shrimp
20% = 8 ml of

The aim of this investigation was to determine which component wavelength of light functioned best in a brine shrimp’s phototaxic and photokinetic responses. It was hypothesised that the brine shrimp would display a heightened positive phototaxic response, and that a more pronounced photokinetic response (increased velocity) would be observed when the samples were exposed to green light. Artemia salina (common name: Brine Shrimp), are from the order Anostraca of the class Crustacea. Adult brine shrimp are around 10-30mm in length, they “consist of a long cylindrical body divided into a head, a thorax with many pairs of foliaceous limbs and the genitalia, and an abdomen.”…

My results to my findings to my brine shrimp experiment was started on 12-28-15, using 4 jars. Each jar contained water, salt, and brine shrimp eggs. I started by filling each jar with tap water and then adding salt. I added 1 TSP of salt and each jar added ½ TSP more of salt. In my experiment I noticed on the first day, 12-28-15, in all the jars the brine shrimp eggs were added to the 4 jars. Some observations I noticed were the eggs didn’t sink right away, they stayed on the surface for awhile. On the second day, 12-29-15, in jar 1 85% of the brine shrimp eggs hatched. In jar 2 75% of the brine shrimp eggs hatched. In jar 3 65% of the brine shrimp eggs hatched, and in jar 4 70% of the brine shrimp eggs hatched. All 4 of the jars had the same observations, they didn’t swim gracefully, they were on the side of the jar with more light, and there was still unhatched…

Behavior of Brine Shrimp in Habitat Selection Introduction: This experiment was developed primarily to find the optimal or preferred living conditions of adult brine shrimp. In this lab 3 variables were tested in different degrees to determine which the shrimp prefer. The different variables were light, ph, and temperature. From outside resources I have found that brine shrimp can survive in temperatures ranging from 4° Celsius to 40° Celsius with an optimal temperature of 20°-25°. So I hope to reinforce this research by testing its validity in the lab. From another outside source brine shrimp display positive photo taxis, which means that they are attracted to light. And finally from my last outside source I have found information that suggests brine shrimp prefer a ph of 7-9 and will die if placed in a solution of salinity higher than 10 and less that 5 for longer periods of time. This lab is important because it is a fairly easy experiment to test and find behavioral traits of a simple organism. Even though from research I was able to find the data that is to be tested in this lab it is important to actually prove the results as they may be incorrect for this population of brine shrimp. So for this lab I am trying to find out what environment brine shrimp prefer to live in and what they don't prefer to live in, and possible what they are unable to live in. I expect that the results of this lab will be fairly similar to the information stated above, but not totally the same. I believe that like most organisms these brine shrimp will prefer to live in the middle of environmental extremes.…

Artemia salina are used as environmental indicator species. They are used to test changes in their environment. A. salina is sensitive to toxins, temperature, and drugs. For the experiment, cysts were put into different amounts of ethanol alcohol and their viability was measured. The hypothesis used was if there is more ethanol alcohol, then the viability of the brine shrimp is unfavorable. The brine shrimp were put into sixteen Petri dishes with the same amount of brine solution. Different amounts of ethanol alcohol were added to each Petri dish. After 168 hours, the brine shrimp were looked at under a microscope and some cysts became nauplii and many died. In the control dishes, with no alcohol, the viability was the lowest; the average viability for treatment one was not the lowest but treatment four was the lowest. Treatment two had the highest viability (Table 1). Treatment one, 0.1668, versus treatment three, 0.1224, and treatment four, 0.0478, confirms that small amounts of ethanol alcohol can be accepted by the A. salina. The numbers of cysts in each Petri dish were not consistent. If the number of cysts were consistent then the comparison between viabilities in each dish would be more accurate. The importance of the average viability is that it is used as representative data. It will help show the inaccuracies of the data recorded. The purpose of this experiment is determine the aptness of A. salina as warnings of ethanol pollution.…

    7. The experiment was designed in a way so that the different temperature conditions can be used to obtain different length of brine shrimp lengths. The goal was to grow brine shrimps of longer lengths so that the more protein for their activity can be obtained. The alternative hypothesis would be that there is a difference in the length of the shrimps grown under room temperature and incubator aquarium. Therefore, null hypothesis is that the brine shrimps length is same when grown at temperatures and the incubator aquarium and the temperature has no effect on their growth. Therefore, the experiment was conducted and the result obtained suggests that the incubator reared adults turned out to be slightly smaller than the counter top reared adults…

An experiment is carried out to study whether temperature is a determining factor for the hatching of brine shrimp eggs. In this experiment, the brine shrimp eggs are allowed to hatch in two different temperatures. This is done by incubating the boiling tubes filled with 30 mL de-chlorinated 2% saline water and 40 brine shrimp egg cysts in two different temperature, namely room temperature (25°C) and 35°C. Each of the treatments is duplicated so that a more accurate result can be obtained. All the boiling tubes are left for the period of one day. The number of successfully hatched brine shrimp eggs is calculated with the aid of a stereomicroscope after one day. The results are tabulated in a table and used to calculate the percentages of hatching success of brine shrimps. A relationship between temperature and the hatching success of brine shrimps are determined from the analysis and interpretation of the outcome of the experiment.…

Ethanol is an alcohol substance that has effects on growth in organisms. Brine shrimp are used to tell the different levels of acidity in environments. Organisms absorb the substance around it; sometimes it has no effect on them sometimes it does. The best way to figure out if the environment has an acidity level too high for normal growth is to put the organism in a dish and watch carefully and observe any changes that occur in comparison to a normal organism that was not exposed to the Ethanol. Brine shrimp change to the levels so it’s a good way to tell whether or not there is Ethanol present and how much.…
