What causes bullying?

Why do people bully others? What causes this to happen? Bullying can mean different things and can have different meanings to people (Why do people bully? 2013). Some might define bullying as purposeful attempts to control another person through verbal abuse (Why do people bully? 2013). Bullying in my opinion happens when the kids or adults have little self-esteem, has home problems or school problems that they do not know how to face and uses it against others. Verbal abuse can be with a certain tone of voice or in content such as teasing or threats/ exclusion (Why do people bully? 2013). In many cases physical bullying and/or violence can occur which the victim may not want (Why do people bully? 2013). Some will use single instances and age difference in their definition of bullying (Why do people bully? 2013). Bullying happens everywhere, at work, home, school, church. Bullying is the most common type of violence in contemporary US society (Why do people bully? 2013). Even though bullying is a form of harassment, it is considered to be a separate category from sexual harassment (Why do people bully? 2013). Bullying is a behavior that is mostly learned in response to stresses in the bully’s world (MCFC). There are many stresses that can cause such behavior. Some are parental relationships, poor academic performance, unsupportive peer networks, or anxiety regarding personal appearance (MCFC). Bullies give off the appearance of confidence but in all reality their actions are driven by insecurities (MCFC). A bully harasses and harms others to get a sense of superiority. Doing this they think it will make up for the lack of control in other parts if their lives (MCFC). Most bullies treat others this way because they themselves have been victims of abuse (MCFC).
