Summary
Can we have happiness without sadness? What really is true happiness and what is sadness? Can we say that you can’t have one without the other? Do we need to go through sadness in order to appreciate and understand happiness? People often ask what really in life brings about true and everlasting happiness. Some say that true happiness can be achieved through family; some say through religion and some just say good food. None of these people are wrong but one thing that is always overlooked in these kinds of talks is the influence of sadness .Every person from every background and culture usually has a different concept of happiness. As humans when we become more intelligent and wiser, than our level of happiness goes down due to the fact that we realize and question more the sorrows of life and appreciate the blessings of happiness less. The French novelist Marcel Proust said is best when it comes to happiness “Happiness is beneficial for the body, but it is grief that develops the powers of the mind.”We will go more in depth on this topic and see if we can truly have happiness without sadness.
Before we go any further, let us first question what truly is happiness? Socrates who is known as the spiritual father of philosophy where by all school of thought rely on him said that happiness is being kept interested in the truth, making sure that the soul is as good as possible, For getting a good soul then one must maintain all four virtues including prudence, temperance, courage and justice.Aristippus who was a student of Socrates believed that we must seek external pleasures in order to be happy and not sad. He is the founder of hedonism which is a school of taught that argues that pleasure is the most important intrinsic good.
