Child Observation
Subject: 1 Year Old Boy
Location: Toy room
Concept: play, Language, sense of self, empathy

It was playtime for the one year old boy. There were all sorts of toys. The playroom was very small. There was a huge toy chest full to the top with toys. On the wall there was a body length mirror. This was the little boys favorite place to play. He would also play with some of the other toys like blocks, cars, stuffed animals and other things. No matter what he grabbed he always brought it in front of the mirror. When he would cry or show any type of emotion he would always work his way over to the mirror. He wanted to see what that emotion looked like. Somehow the mirror always made things better. The one year old plays in the mirror as if it is another child playing right along with him. The boy waves bye bye and hello to himself in the mirror. He also moves his mouth and other body parts in the mirror. The child walks over to the toy chest and starts throwing toys on to the floor then finally finds the toy he was looking for. The toy is a microphone. He talks very loudly into it and giggles. He isn't saying any words, just making noises. Then he walks over to his activity table where he proceeds to turn the table on. When the toy turns on music starts to play. The boy begins to dance. He makes sure you can see him. He likes attention. After all the play the boy becomes tired and runs to get his puppy. This puppy is a green stuffed animal. The little boy picks puppy up and kisses it. Then he throws it onto his shoulder and proceeds to hug it. While hugging the puppy he is patting it on its back. Then he gently puts the puppy to the floor and walks away. If the little boy is told to love his puppy he then again kisses and hugs the stuffed animal. Bedtime finally come so the little boy gathers his puppy and climbs into his bed. Lying down in bed he pulls the cover over him and goes to sleep without further

I observed a child throwing a fit at the mall the other day. This child did not want to leave the store and did not want to get into her stroller. She started to throw her head back and scream very loudly. Then she would throw her arms around and kick, in an attempt to not be strapped in. The mother started to yell at her daughter to stop while trying to strap her in. After a few minutes of the child kicking and screaming she was able to strap her in. But the child continued to scream, this was when the mother decided to leave the mall. My recommendation is that instead of trying to force the child into the stroller the parent could have held the child. Trying her best to calm her down, since the child was throwing around her body while the…

Tommy is sitting on the floor with his toys around him. His teacher sits on the floor next to him and he begins to hand his teacher a series of toys. He is interested in the reaction of his teacher as he hands her his blocks, one by one. Tommy leans forward, grabs a block and hands it to his teacher. He watches her face and sort of drops his mouth open as he waits for her reaction. She then tells him the letter and color on the block. He nods his head forward and then reaches for another block and proceeds to pick up another block. After picking up 5 blocks and handing them to his teacher he then crawls across the floor to a toy car and pushes it for a moment. He looks up at his teacher to see what she is doing and pushes the car toward her. He smiles at her and she smiles back and says “Is that your car?” he smiles again and nods his head forward. Tommy is very interested in his teacher’s reaction to him. She continues to watch him even when he is interested in a toy or moving away from her. He does check to see if she is pay attention to him as he plays. His teacher starts picking up toys and organizing the room and he periodically goes over to her and becomes interested in what she is doing. Tommy seems very dependent on his teachers mood. It seems that their relationship is positive and his teacher is very…
