Policies exist to protect the children, the parents and the staff and to make sure that everyone present in the setting has an understanding of the way in which the organisation functions. Policies are necessary to ensure that the setting flows smoothly. Everyone gets a clear understanding of how they should behave within the setting. The policies state that people have certain responsibilities. When policies and codes of practice are well contemplated and most importantly, implemented properly, they provide a strong understanding and a satisfactory agreement on how things should be carried out within the setting. These policies include items such as a Health, Safety and Hygiene Policy, an Accident Policy, an Acceptable Behaviour Policy, a Fire Drill Policy and a Curriculum Policy. I am going to discuss the Health, Safety and Hygiene Policy. This policy is necessary so that children are not injured by dangerous objects, so that the spread of illnesses is prevent and to ensure food is handled properly to prevent any sickness form occurring.
“Safeguarding is an overarching and all-encompassing umbrella term which includes general health and safety issues when working with children” (Veale, 2013).
“The health and development of babies and children is monitored from the time that women know they are pregnant until children leave school.” (Dryden, Forbes and Mukherji, 2005).
This statement shows why a health and safety policy is necessary in settings.
I am also going to discuss the Child Protection Policy. Gov.uk (2014) [online] states that this The Child Protection Policy is a statement of intent that demonstrates a commitment to safeguard children involved with a setting.
