Growing up, Sedaris had a good life. He had a loving family that supported him and made sure he was well taking care of. Sedaris’ friend, Hugh had a very difficult lifestyle. When Hugh was growing up as a child, he saw things that children should not be forced to witness. Hugh’s class took a field trip to a slaughterhouse one day, where they were treated to a pig’s execution. “…One of the brothers drew a pistol from his back pocket, held it against the animal’s temple, and shot the piglet, execution-style.” (Paragraph 6, page 109) At another occasion, Hugh witnesses a dead man on a telephone pole. “Unlike me, he left the theater two hours later, to find a dead man hanging from a telephone pole at the far end of the unpaved parking lot.” (Paragraph 10, page 110) Hugh was often neglected by this family and spent majority of his adolescence with surrogate parents. Hugh’s life wasn’t the not good at all but Sedaris wanted Hugh’s life.…
A memory of mine which is of great importance to me is the day I left my country to study in the USA, which has become really distorted now that I try to recall the details. I can remember that my family members and friends came to see me off from the airport, but I cannot exactly bring to mind all the people who were there. I cannot remember the last words my mother spoke to me but all I could remember was that she became immensely emotional about me leaving her. On the contrary, I can still vividly remember the first day I met my best friend in class 3. I can still clearly remember what we talked about when we met and where it took…
General question on childhood: I interviewed a seventy year old woman named Virginia that I met while doing my community service. I asked her to think about her first ten years of life and to describe times that she can remember being cared for. She said that it was her grandmother that did most of the caretaking for her, especially when she was sick. She recalled one time when she had a really bad sinus infection that her grandmother helped her through. When I asked her if she could think of any time she was not very well cared for, the only time she could think of is when her father would come home bombed, which sparked some intense arguments in the family. She recalled feeling very lost during these times. Fun times in her childhood consisted of time with her family since she did not have any friends as a child. Specifically, she remembered having a lot of fun planting pumpkin seeds with her family.…

During May in my 4th grade, we decided to go to Turkey. When I went back to Turkey, it was better than ever. All my family went except for my father. We went for two months, and it was the best experience ever. I couldn’t meet up with many of my old friends, but I didn’t really…
Memories are a funny thing. They are the mental and emotional ties that we have to the past. Without photographs or videos, memories are all we have to recall significant moments throughout our lives. Whether it is a momentous life achievement, or a simple snap shot of being happy or sad, memories live within our psyche. They are not tangible objects; they are not even exact or clear. They are fuzzy scenes in our minds that we hold on to because they evoke certain emotions or signify some kind of importance. Or maybe you have some memories stowed away and the reason has yet to be revealed. The most interesting and complex element to memories is that they are easily interfered with. While time and age are the most obvious…
One memory that really sticks out in my mind from my childhood is when I got my first skateboard. I remember for weeks after I spent hours upon hours outside on it, and I continue to ride to this day.…

Memories from my childhood life made me what I have become today. There are many different childhood memories that I can remember but there were two that really made an impact to how my personality is today. I never thought that these events would have any effect in shaping my personality now because they happened so long ago, but I can see that it has.…
I already knew Santa didn’t exist. At the age when most kids were trying to stay awake all night on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, I was in my bed, anxiously trying to fall asleep so morning would come faster and I could open presents. Unlike most kids my age, I already knew the real story. It was a hoax, a story that parents tell their kids to trick them into believing that if they if they weren’t good, Santa wouldn’t bring them anything. I knew that they, in fact, were the ones putting those presents under the tree and that the child’s behavior had little to do with it. I knew it, but I didn’t tell. I didn’t tell my friends at school, my cousins, or even my mom that I knew the truth. I already knew about the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. I knew that if you held your face a certain way for long enough, it wouldn’t stay that way, and that you wouldn‘t go blind from sitting to close to the television. When I was about six or seven, I started asking my dad questions...and got answers.…
I am an international college student from Vietnam, and have been through twelve grades with lots of memories. One thing I could say is the interval time between my sixth and eighth grade was the time that I cherish the most. It is not only because it was my most successful time with a bunch of fabulous achievements I obtained, but also because literally it was my great pleasure to be instructed by a very thoughtful teacher. She was my Mathematics teacher, and her name is Mrs. Nguyen.…
