Cinematography of Django Unchained
Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, follows the story of a slave named Django (Jamie Foxx) who is on a quest to save his wife after being liberated by a German bounty hunter, Dr. Schultz (Christoph Waltz). The first half of the film has many western themes and characters including bounty hunters, a sheriff, and pays homage to the old western movies. The second half of the film is more a Blaxploitation/revenge film and focuses on trying to create a black hero. The film follows Django who starts off as a beaten down slave who was forcefully separated from his wife, but evolves into a cool and confident bounty hunter. In the first half of the film, Django and Schultz collect bounties on wanted criminals and Django gets revenge on some of his former masters. After they amass a fortune, Schultz and Django hatch a plan to go to “Candieland” the plantation of Calvin Candie (DiCaprio) and purchase Django’s wife from him. Naturally, everything goes wrong and Django has to fight his way out of Candieland and rescue his wife. Much like Inglorious Basterds, Django is Tarantino’s way of “correcting” history. This film is essentially a feel good story about an oppressed slave overcoming his struggles and getting revenge on his oppressors. Although the film does have aspects of love and revenge, the main theme is actually the American Dream. Django starts off as an average slave but by the end of the film, turns into the greatest gun slinger in the west, saves his wife, and lives happily ever after. According to Robert Richardson, the cinematographer of this film, the goal of the cinematography was to use iconic American West backgrounds as a montage to show Django traveling and growing as person and bounty hunter. Tarantino used panoramic long shots and a widescreen aspect ratio to show the vastness of the American West and to symbolize the vast opportunities Django has in front of him. Featuring Django and Dr. Schultz as part of the landscape instead of the main

The various angles at which he shoots at times veritably keeps our focus on what the Hunter is experiencing. At times, the viewers are transported to that forest, and the divergent emotions the Hunter is experienced by the viewers as well. It would be a treat to see this film on a large screen as viewing is on a small screen seems to somewhat misse some of the impact of the beauty of nature and the conflict of the Hunter.…

Having to watch this movie over and over with my wife, I have come to know this movie quite well. The story revolves around a spoiled Miss Scarlet O’Hara. The movie starts off with the moment she finds her (what she feels is her) true love, Ashley Wilkes is going to marry his cousin, Melanie; to Scarlet “getting even” with Ashley by marrying Melanie’s brother, Charles (who dies in the war due to Measles); to marrying her sister’s (Suellen) betrothed Mr. Frank Kennedy, who dies trying to protect Scarlet after a run in with some ruthless fellows; to her third husband and the co-main character of the story rich, playboy and black sheep to his own family, Mr. Rhett Butler. The story line of how this all boils down and the events that take place before, during and after each of these events is what builds this story up to see how a jealous and less than perfect Southern Belle such as Ms. Scarlet O’Hara, why Tara is so important to her, why Scarlet is the self-efficient, will do what it takes to make this work kind of women and how she made it through all that she endured.…

The people Trey and the rest of the men met helped them start a new life and get them started in a new life of freedom and decisions that they can make on their own and not be told what to do like Michael would do when they were slaves. All in all, these men were now free and were very satisfied, for how they got free, and they fought very hard for that freedom and they believed in…

    Violence In Mandingo

It has many iconographic traits, and is somewhat historically accurate, however, it is definitely set apart from the traditional western, like the Spaghetti westerns such as A Fistful of Dollars, or the ‘epic’ western The Big Country (Dirks, T 2017). Even though it is considered a revisionist western, it does feature many spaghetti western features, as it is heavily inspired by spaghetti westerns, specifically Django, a 1966 film by Sergio Corbucci. The violence in the film is necessary to convey a particular message about the evils of slavery, and how there was much more going on than they might necessarily display in other western films. Many demonstrations of violence and slavery are displayed throughout different westerns. Django Unchained has taken bits and pieces from iconic western films to make the violence displayed it’s own. In many years to come, this film will be an iconic western of it’s own, as it’s one that is different, but still has the same attributes as other western…
