Drexel’s Commitment to Civic Engagement Drexel University President John Fry coined the phrase “Drexel will be the most civically engaged university in the United States” during a speech that took place almost six years ago. Since then, the Drexel community and student body have worked diligently to help successfully achieve the main goal of this mission by giving back to the surrounding community in a variety of ways. Through this ongoing endeavor, many people have benefitted from the programs and initiatives established, whether it be for professional reasons or just a chance to meet and interact with members from Drexel to establish a strong relationship between the members of Drexel University and those who live in the surrounding area. …show more content…
This course works to help students become engaged in the community and work to fulfill President Fry’s dream. This course pairs each student with an organization that is in the immediate area around Drexel, and the type of service varies from class to class. I felt that it was important to include this course as one of the main ways that Drexel is civically engaged because it helps teach students about the needs of the community and allows them to become a citizen of the surrounding area. I have personal experience with the Wright Recreational Center, one of the partners that works with Drexel. This is an after school program that allows for the students to interact with Drexel student, receive help with homework, and have some fun in the gym. This has been an eye-opening experience for me because it demonstrated the importance of getting involved in the community through the smiles and laughter during my short experience. This program allows the Drexel students to minor in education while providing a service to the community. I feel that DragonsTeach is a beneficial program that really intrigued me. I have listened to many speeches from representatives from DragonsTeach and each time I feel that this program is a great way to give back to the community. Based on stories that the representatives tell, the children are thrilled whenever the DragonsTeach program comes into the school because of the fun science experiments set up to help further their education. I have given serious thought to joining this program because teaching an engineering course was one profession that I could see myself doing, and by getting my education to do this I would be able to help strengthen the minds of young students and provide them with opportunities that they may not have had if DragonsTeach did not provide a strong program for the

    The first Drexel-sponsored event I attended was on Saturday, September 12th for the ropes course. Part of the welcome week festivities, this event offered several activities geared towards not only introducing us to one another, but learning how to work on a task as a collective group. The main theme of the day was teambuilding through a variety of both physical and mental exercises, all with the emphasis of building bonds with other students that would carry over to the school year.     However, there remains an underlying tension between students and the surrounding community. From the student perspective, there are constant threats to the safety of the student body from “locals” who have the misconception that because the student attends an expensive university, they have assets that can be taken.     Change is inevitable and the popular one hit wonder, Video Killed the Radio Star, echoes a nostalgic desire to appreciate the past. The simple, yet meaningful verse, “we can’t rewind we’ve gone too far,” drives home the notion that the past is in the past, and one can only move forward. The song directly relates to technological changes in music at that time period. The lyrics give the impression radio will be replaced by visually stimulating music videos; however, the future has proved that radio has not been replaced; music has merely been enhanced by the continuous change of technological advancements. Political scientist and professor, Robert Putnam illustrates in his book, Bowling Alone: America’s Declining Social Capital, how one of the primary culprits in the decline of political awareness and civic engagement is the new media, for example, the Internet. Further studies suggest this is not necessarily the case. Video Killed the Radio Star mirrors the relentless argument of whether the mass media has hindered or assisted in political awareness and civic activity in adolescents and young adults. The radio made people famous, and even after music videos became popular, music was still streamed through a radio and continues to be used to this day. Studies have shown that civic engagement and political awareness has declined, at all age levels, and yet there is evidence that the mass media can have a positive effect on cultivating social capital, especially in the interest of young voters in America.…

    Lets face it, when we hear the words “community service”, we automatically think it’s going to be torcher, hard labor or something scary. At least, that’s what I thought when my professors first told me I had to do 30 hours of community service. I thought it was going to be impossible for me to do 30 hours along with commuting back and forth to school; transportation was already an issue for me.
