Classical Conditioning
Traditionally Classical conditioning is a powerful and widely utilised form of learning best associated with Ivan Pavlov (Mcsweeny, 2004). The basic Pavilion model of behaviour proposes, learning is largely an associative process and most behaviour is conditioned by reward and punishment. The model discusses the presentation of two or more events defined experimentally through a distinct sequential relationship which occur in complete sequence, over a short period of time. This sequence becomes fused into a persons mind, ultimately producing the same result (Mcsweeny, 2004). This process results in learning occurring at the behavioural, cognitive and neural levels producing four basic trends, which include acquisition, extinction, generalization and discrimination, and underlying conditioning (priester, 2008). The conventionally held view of classical conditioning is that it conditions our involuntary responses and that only our autonomic nervous system can be classically conditioned (chaiken, 2008).

However, new developments have found that the voluntary skeletal responses, thought to be solely controlled by operant or instrumental conditioning can be modified through classical conditioning and that behaviour can be modified at both a lower and a deeper level of brand processing, completely altering the choice decisions of low involved consumers (McEwen, 1984). Investigations undertaken by Mcsweeney and Bierley found the form of the Conditioned response and the sequential arrangement of the Conditioned Stimulus and Unconditioned Stimulus does not have to resemble the Unconditioned Response to establish a Conditioned Response. It found that Low involved consumers are often not motivated to carefully process decision-relevant marketing stimuli (challis, 2004), and that a deeper level of processing has a more enduring effect on brand retrieval, with even a lower level of processing affecting brand memory (Craik & Lockhart, 2004).     Classical conditioning is a form of basic learning the body automatically responds to a stimulus. One stimulus takes on the properties of another. The Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov (1849-1936) is credited for discovering the basic principles of classical conditioning whilst he was studying digestion in dogs. He developed a technique for collecting dog’s salivary secretions. Pavlov (cited in Eysneck M.W 2009) noticed that the dogs would often start salivating before they were given any food or saw the feeding bucket or even when they heard the footstep of the laboratory assistant coming to feed them. Quite by accident Pavlov had discovered that the environmental control of behaviour can be changed as a result of two stimuli becoming associated with each other.     By definition, classical conditioning refers to conditioning in which the conditioned stimulus is paired with and precedes the unconditioned stimulus until the conditioned stimulus alone is sufficient to elicit the response (Merriam-Webster, 2013). As a general concept, classical conditioning assists organisms in learning which stimuli signals are conducive to survival and which stimuli signals are detrimental to survival (Olson & Hergenhahn, 2009). As an example imagine that you decide to attend a road trip. You decide to have a fruit snack while traveling. The twisting and turning in your travels causes motion sickness and creates nausea. This leads to nausea every time you come in contact with a fruit snack, which leads to an avoidance of fruit snacks. This is a form of classical conditioning.     The idea of classical condition is one of the most notable learning techniques because it involves a stimulus rewarded for a certain response. Naturally, animals and human have unconditioned stimulus that triggers an unconditioned response. The most common connection is the correlation between food and salivation. Food naturally draws organism to it in order to satisfy a drive created by hunger to acquire homeostasis.     Classical conditioning is an association between two stimuli; It is what proceeds the response. The two stimuli in my experiment was the ringing of the bell and the on and off of the light switch performed in a dark room. During my experiment I rang the bell and then immediately turned off the lights. I remained in the dark for fifteen seconds then turned the light back on. I left the light on for fifteen seconds, and would monitor my pupils in the mirror then ring the bell and would simultaneously turned off the light again. After doing this several times, I rang the bell one last time but did not turn off the lights. Then I immediately looked into the mirror to monitor my pupils. I noticed that the pupils dilated. The unconditional response (UR) is that my pupils would dilate when the room became dark which I had no control. The conditioned response (CR) is that the bell stimulated the pupils to dilate. Prier to this time, the ringing of the bell had no effect on the dilation of my pupils. Therefore, the classical conditioning programmed my pupils to dilate upon the ringing of the bell and controlling the light stimuli.…
