Cleopatra and Anthony
What does this passage suggest about the relationship between Cleopatra and Antony? Compare this with how the relationship is portrayed in the other written source material from the classical period in Book 1, Chapter 1.

The relationship portrayed in the extract, between Anthony and Cleopatra seems at first to be one sided. Anthony is depicted as an ‘insensitive brute with a heart of stone’ in comparison to Cleopatra who is ‘utterly devoted to him alone’. This show of devotion is a continuous theme in the passage and is further illustrated by the fact that she ‘was content to be called his mistress’ whilst she was the ‘sovereign of many nations’ unlike his wife who married Anthony out of political convenience. References are made to that idea that Anthony’s refusal of Cleopatra ‘would be the death of her’ further illustrates this. Later in the passage Anthony is shown to have been ‘melted and unmanned’ by this show of affection and that ‘he began to believe that she would take her own life’. This is shown to be true by that fact that he ‘returned to Alexandria and put off his Median expedition’ even though this would have a detrimental effect on his military activities in Parthia which ‘was said to be greatly weakened by internal dissensions’. This seems to show that although Anthony had many pressing issues to contend with he was willing to put the issue of Cleopatra’s well being before personal gain and return to be by her side.

In comparison to other written material concerning Anthony and Cleopatra’s relationship the first extract focuses on personal feelings and their romantic relationship which is implied to be reciprocated by both parties. Plutarch shows the relationship in an entirely different light, in which Anthony is bewitched by Cleopatra. Anthony is ‘excited to the point of madness’ and his ‘many passions which had hitherto lain concealed’ were drawn out of him implying that Cleopatra was a corrupting influence.     What is most interesting, at least according to Schiff, is that Cleopatra entered the relationship “of her will” without any outside influence (72). Caesar first appears in Cleopatra’s history right before the Alexandria War begins. The Egyptian queen and her brother Ptolemy XIII were at war with each other. Cleopatra had backed Pompey, the family patron who was opposing the famous general, Caesar. Consequently, this put her on the wrong side. After the brutal beheading of Pompey by mercenaries hired by Ptolemy XIII, the fledgling female pharaoh now had to convince Caesar that she was allying herself with him.     Assessing a Queen Plutarch and Octavian both write damning accounts concerning the behavior and actions of Marc Antony and his lover Cleopatra. While Plutarch appears to take a more objective approach, Octavian sets out to condemn the former general and the Egyptian Queen.     It’s almost immediately clear from this passage that Plutarch believed Antony to be a prisoner in the relationship. He was kept in “constant tutelage” and Cleopatra “released him neither night nor day.” Tutelage meaning “protection of, or authority over, someone or something”  (http://www.askoxford.com/concise_oed/tutelage?view=uk – Accessed 6th November 2008) - these validations are great but it would be even better if you put them in a bibliography and had a reference here – it would also reduce your word count, makes it clear this is not a relationship of mutual love. Antony is rarely allowed out of Cleopatra’s sight. She did everything with him: “She played at dice…of a serving maiden.” – this quote is unclear, you need more of it in order to make sense She joined in on all activities that he did, despite how debasing they might be to a Queen. But isn’t the emphasis on how much more debasing they were to an ‘Imperator’ ? Although this might have been an act of love, Plutarch portrays it as something that stems from Cleopatra’s obsessive need to be with Antony and watch him constantly. Plutarch re-iterates his view that Antony is a prisoner, not a lover.  Is this linked to the disapproval of romantic love as discussed in Book 1 p 11 ?…

    Cleopatra VII was a remarkably intelligent woman with great charisma and political astuteness. The ancient historian, Plutarch, stated that “to know her was to be touched with an irresistible charm. Her delightful manner of speaking was such as to win the heart.” (Bradford 14). She utilized these assets to win over the favor of two of the most powerful man of Ancient Rome, Julius Caesar and Marc Antony. Cleopatra is portrayed as being manipulative, conniving; and accused of utilizing her relationships for the advancement for power and the expansion of her empire. Although this is true, there were stark differences in the two relationships Cleopatra had with each man. She reached out to Caesar in her time of no power and continued to be submissive to him throughout their relationship. Even though there was a speculated love connection between the two, Caesar never lost sight of his priority as a politician and did not concede to every one of his mistresses’ requests. While a reversal of roles occurred with Marc Antony, she had the upper hand and he eventually became fiscally and emotionally dependent on her. In addition, he was easily manipulated, thus Cleopatra frequently got her way. Overall, the territorial gain and the power she had over him proved that Cleopatra’s relationship with Marc Antony was more politically beneficial than with Julius Caesar.…

    During the spring of 51 BC Auletes died and declared Cleopatra (now 18yrs) would wed her brother Ptolemy XIII (now 10yrs) and rule together. Cleopatra wanted to plan a way to eliminate her brother from power. The first two years of Cleopatra’s reigning, the Nile did not flood and Alexandra civilisation was deteriorating from the famine. This rooted a rebellion amongst society holding Cleopatra responsible and also she had her brother trying to eradicate her. She then left for Syria and compiled an army to return to Egypt and restore her position on the throne. Cleopatra realised that with the help of Caesar (Roman support) she would more likely repossess her position. Both Caesar and Cleopatra were intent to use the other. Caesar desired the repayment of Auletes’s debt and Cleopatra was insistent on regaining the throne. They later became lovers and spent the winter surrounded by forces in Alexandria.     It is obvious that Atia was in love with Antony because she stated that she could perhaps love him. She is an example of this desire that Fantham explains that women began to have, however, it is not the celebration of love and marriage that is explained in chapter ten. Although it is not exactly what is stated to be characteristics of this model, it is a mixture of the model as well as previous beliefs of love and sex. Antony’s laughter towards the silliness of the love that Atia was professing is an example of previous beliefs. Although Atia does have the satisfaction of indulging in this fantasy, in the end she is still slapped physically and emotionally in the face. This rejection she received was not only a rejection, but a representation that in the end, Antony was still in charge. The reason why Antony was still in charge was because in the end, she was the one offering, and he had the power from the beginning of accepting or rejecting her. He was still the one who had the power, because if it were completely like the poems of this new behavior of love, Atia would be the one choosing-not Antony. Previous beliefs of sexuality were explained by McGinn’s book, “Prostitution, Sexuality, and the Law in Ancient Rome”, where he explains how a woman disgraced through conviction under law as a prostitute had that label everywhere she went through the toga- a symbol and badge of shame (p.339). Nonetheless, women’s sexuality and the actions she took could quickly escalate to harsh consequences if she did not follow society’s norms and this new model was one that was very different. The title itself already announces some information: first of all, that these two are great characters; one is a Roman triumvir, the other is the most famous queen of Egypt. The second main information is the duality, which announces a great theatrical theme and the variations between a duel and a duo. Having previously defeated Caesar in a land battle, Antony is again defeated at sea. He blames Cleopatra. Because the play’s dramatic structure suggests that the battle in Act IV will be climactic and probably result in Antony’s death, Antony’s victory in these scenes is surprising and makes the plot much less predictable.     In our scene Portia presents the classic wife, worrying for her husband’s health of body and of mind. This is the first and only time that Portia is seen in Julius Ceasar. This is pretty important, because it doesn’t allow our view of her to change, therefore, everything she says can be taken at face value. We first hear of her saying “Brutus, my lord!” Which shows the interesting factor of subservience of women, in Ancient Roman times.
