College Writing Reflection
College writing has helped me to learn more about myself, and the kind of writer that I want to be. Going from writing five paragraph essays, to more of a proper paper was a transition at first; But, after relearning how to write it, I found out that is was simple. I found that college writing is a lot more in depth and in detail than high school writing. Before being in a college class I never enjoyed writing essays about boring subjects, but I have grown to like writing more. This class taught me some new ideas, helped to improve my writing, and revealed some other types of writing used in colleges nationwide. As I was writing, I improved on the structure of the papers and how it should be organized. In addition, I took my papers more seriously because I have a college credit on the line that I want to receive. Instead of extra fluff in an essay, I learned to get the point across as best as you can with the least amount of extra words. Before …show more content…
I felt that in my college application essay I needed to be as honest as possible because this was for my future education and I also wanted to impress the school with a good paper. Another paper that was difficult to write was the rhetorical analysis. It was challenging having to write a paper just based off an ad with not a lot of text. In order to write the paper you had to take apart the ad and figure out what the real meaning of it was. I had to think about the message that the organization wanted to get across. The easiest essay that I thought to write was the research paper. I had all of my information researched ahead of time and then I just had to put it all together. Learning to write these papers will help me in college and in the workforce because I will know how to write a strong paper. Overall, this class helped me to develop as a better writer and also taught me some great

The following are three essays that I worked on during the semester. Most of it remains the same, while some of my ideas have developed. The only major changes made were redirecting the ideas in the Where is Waldo Now essay. In English 1102 I struggled with a lot, Professor Grant really challenged what I thought I knew about writing. Being that English is my second language, language barriers normally do not reflect in my speech or writing. I felt that this semester really showed me that I still had work to do. Passive voice, comma slices, forming arguments, and grammar are some of the many skills that I worked on during this semester. I attended the Writing Center as often as I could; I also asked questions during office hours. I worked on perfecting these skills in my other classes as well by reading out loud. By exploring these different options my essay grades improved 15 points. Hopefully my portfolio and future papers reflects the time and practice I’ve put into my writing.…

Writing in college is much different because you have to be more structured and formal. College writing comes with expanded vocabulary and going into more detail about what you are writing. I learned this the first week. If I didn’t know how to read and write where would I be? Nowhere. Absolutely nowhere. As of today my literacy skills can improve, and I’m working on that today. Literacy is a big part of life and you will come so successful doing this. Looking back into my middle and the beginning of my high school years I wish I had read more and wrote things more and I could be even more successful. I look at myself now and I see how far I have become as a reader and…

I learned two major things about my writing skills during this class. First, when presenting an essay for peer review, make sure that it is not a very rough draft. Second, the types of essay styles can change easily when writing. Even though my paper is supposed to be expository, using certain words and tone can create a totally different essay style.…

I learned that writing a paper is not only difficult for me but also to my peers. They struggled a lot with getting their thoughts down on paper just like I did. I learned that writing essays is not easy for anyone, especially when writing under pressure. I learned that sometimes leaving your writing for last minute can be a bad thing because they begin to write nonsense in order to get there work done. My peers writing assignments showed me what are the correct things to add to my paper, and what not to add to my paper.…

Many professors may think that a concurrent senior coming out of high school like me cannot have the skills needed to succeed in college-level writing; however, after taking Composition I and II in the fall and spring of my Senior year, I believe I can write well thought and crafted college level essays. While I have strengthened some areas of writing more than others, I have learned and acquired many important concepts and techniques and incorporated them into my writing. By taking Composition I and II, I believe that I have developed the required skills and ideologies to succeed in college-level writing. Although a college level paper should demonstrate an understanding of tone, style, cohesion,…

I have learned that revising your writing makes it way better than before. You find your mistakes and realize you can replace words such as “bring to” to a different high vocabulary word such as “cease”. I know now that there is no way to make your paper perfect. There will always be a word, words, or sentence you could change. In addition, I’ve gained a better understanding on passive and active sentences. Once I was done writing my paper, and began to reread it I found some passive sentences. All I did was revise the sentence which helped my writing flow better. Initially, I read the first paper I wrote for the Quarter 1 Writing Assessment and I noticed that I didn’t follow the directions completely. As I read on, there were many simple sentences and not many transitional words.…

I enjoyed that these three papers were able to make me a stronger writer. The self in context essay I was able to learn how to express my emotions in writing. Most importantly writing the essay I realized that I have been keeping my emotions hidden. The lyrical essay got me to start thinking about writing poems again. Lastly the reportage essay forced me to step out of my comfort zone and have some fun. I am very thankful for this…

Over the course of this year in English, I think my writing process has excelled the most along with my overall writing. In the past, I have used similar techniques to develop a final essay, but, this year, I have begin to rely more heavily on planning out and slowly chipping away at my essays and papers. I believe also that because of this planning the strength of my writing as a whole has grown. Personally, I do not think that I grew in my vocabulary usage. Overall this year, I grew as a writer in ways that I would not have predicted.…

My writing has changed a lot in my first-semester essay writing class. I finally took a class that teaches me useful information and how to properly write an essay. Essay Writing overall was a fun experience it was a slow start for me in the beginning but once I was able to get the work done I was fine. There were a lot of positives to taking this class. I started the year struggling to come up with ideas to write about nut now I can brainstorm and put my words down on the paper better than ever. “If I could travel anyplace in the world for free, I would want to go to North Korea. I would love to see what it's like.” I struggled with proper punctuation and the use of commas and such throughout my high school career and I still struggle with it I hope to learn more about it in the near future. “Cars are one of the best inventions ever.” I needed some direction on making my sentences longer with getting to the point at the same time. There's a lot of small things I need to still improve on but I feel like I got a good start with the Essay Writing course. I got a lot of useful feedback from Mrs.Pennings on all my essays like when to use certain words and proper punctuation and some compliments the really…

Over the past 3 months, my writing has improved dramatically. After writing countless essays and journals along with other assignments, I can say that my writing has almost become twice as good since high school. For this I am grateful. The writing skills that I have learned will be very useful in life beyond college. I have learned that writing is an art form; And similar to pieces of art, writing improves over time and it an always be improved. Among the many aspects of writing that I have improved upon, the most important things include: How to develop an introduction paragraph, teacher feedback, and developing transitions from one topic to another.…

My education begins with me attending my community college back in Laredo, Texas. In Laredo Community College, I didn’t know which major to go into in all honesty, like all new college students I was caught up with the new experience of college and the scenery the college provided. Then after discussions with my advisors I’ve decided to enter the field of Criminal Justice, which at a time where difficult because I’d needed to know different laws that have changed over the years, many court cases that change our way for society, the functions of the justice system. After graduating community college, I’ve received my Associates Degree in Criminal Justice and decided to continue my education at Texas A&M International University (TAMIU) for my…
