NURSING PROGRAM
NUR 263 - NURSING ACROSS THE LIFE SPAN II
PEDIATRIC COMMUNITY TEACHING EXPERIENCE

1. Purpose: To help you become more aware of the role of the nurse outside the traditional hospital setting, and to provide teaching of a health promotion topic to children in the community (grades K - 12).

2. Selection of the group of children may be from the following areas:
a) Scouts
b) Private schools
c) Private daycare centers
d) Churches
e) After school care centers
f) Other groups as approved by your course coordinator

3. To complete this project, the following will be required:

a) Choose an age group to present a health education program.

b) Contact a responsible representative from the agency, church, or school. You cannot use a relative or close friend as your representative.

c) Set up a day and time as well as receive suggestions for topics.

d) Develop a written teaching plan based on stage of growth and development and cognitive level (include audio-visual aides, handouts, etc. - BE CREATIVE!). [See attached format for teaching plan.]

e) Teaching plan is due to pediatric coordinator on the assigned date for approval. Include a topic outline with examples of teaching aides to be used (include copies). (If two students are working together, they only need to submit 1 copy to the pediatric instructor.)

f) Implement the teaching plan on the scheduled date. This will not be done during regular scheduled clinical time. This assignment counts as 1.5 clinical hours.

g) Evaluate the experience.

h) The summary report (see attached outline) and the evaluation form(s) are due to pediatric coordinator on the assigned date.

4. Evaluation: (See evaluation forms in learning packet) Each student will turn in a separate evaluation form by the teacher or leader of the group. You can turn in one summary report together. Wear the MTC nursing uniform when performing the teaching project.
