Comparing Baldwin's Gift Of The Magi And A Summer Tragedy
In O’Henry’s “Gift of the Magi,” Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues,” and in Bontemps’s “A Summer Tragedy” one discusses the love they have is a healthy relationship. In O’Henry’s “Gift of the Magi” James and Della sold their prized possessions for each other, and they are poor. In Baldwin’s “Sonny’s Blues” Sonny and his brother builds a bond. In Bontemps’s “A Summer Tragedy” Jeff and Jennie dies together out of love and being brave. Have you ever loved someone so much? Even though James and Della do not have money, they go through a lot to give each other a gift for Christmas. Della sold her prized possession for her husband James “’Twenty dollars,’ said Mrs.Sofrone lifting the [Della’s] hair to feel its weight” (O.Henry50). Della gave up the most valuable thing she had, her hair, for her husband a gift. James also sold his most prized possession for Della the gift she always wanted “’I sold the watch to get the money to buy the combs’” (O’Henry53). They both are poor and the both sold their prized possession to get each other a gift they cannot use. They love each other so much the did not care about the gifts, at the moment. Jennie is aging as well “…old…” and “…scrawny and gnarled as a string bean…” (Bontemps194). She cannot help herself so let alone help her husband do anything around in the field.
