The Dow Jones Industrial Average is at an all-time high according to google finance (www.google.com/finance), which is a good indication that our economy is doing. It is a weighted indicator of how the stock market is doing, which in turn is a lot of people’s money. If it is up that means we have a growing economy and mostly everyone is happy. Pertaining to Black Friday, this is when most businesses’ get their shoppers. This is a time where you will see a big surge, or dip, in the stock market. Though these fluctuations in price are believed to only cause very-short term or long term effects, as said by Investopedia (How is the stock market affected by Thanksgiving and Black Friday? www.investopedia.com) They also stated that the long term effects still remain uncertain. Black Friday appears to be a big boost to big businesses and a dip for smaller ones; this is completely ridiculous. Buying products from all major businesses just hurts the economics for smaller businesses who cannot afford to advertise, to stoop prices as low as larger corporations.…

The topic my partner and I have based the National History Day Project on is the Mayan Calender system compared to the Hopi Indian Tribe system. The reason I liked this topic is because it is currently 2012 and so the the world ending is a huge controversy in society. I am very interested in the subject and wished to do deeper research on the predictions by not only the Ancient Civilization of the Mayans. I have recently discovered the Maya people are not the only people with these beliefs and so I have grown more fascinated. The idea of basing our project on this topic was actually the first thing to cross my mind when we were informed of the project, so we decided it fit with everything this year.…

My wife loves to go Black Friday shopping. I decided to venture out with her as I was curious about the environment. I figured it would be a great observation point as it is intense and very busy. We left our home at 6:30pm and arrived at Walmart at 7:00pm on Thanksgiving night. The parking lot was completely full and people were searching for carts in between cars. I immediately knew this was going to be a long night. As we entered the front door, we were already stopped by the masses of people. There were lines curving in every direction and people seemed to have already lost their patience. There was a strong body odor that we noticed from the multitudes of people crammed together and the vibe was they were out for blood. It started to become very comical for me.…

After a while, I took a shower, eat breakfast and dressed up. I use public transit to go superstore to do some grocery shopping. When I was inside of the bus, I tried to speak with the person behind me by using hand gestures, but he was not understanding me so rather than talking I take a moment of silent. As the bus goes and goes on, I sat there for a long time, so I had to ask the driver. As I was asking for driver, he was not trying to understanding me so I wrote superstore on a piece of paper. After a while, he looked at me and he says there you go, but still I was confused where I am going and I went back to my own sit. Although, the driver dropped me at superstore. I went inside of the superstore, as I was doing grocery shopping. There was one lady standing in front of me. In this situation, I tried to use hand gesture to get rid of her from my way. But she was rude with me and it makes me frustrated, so I ask someone to help but no one was helping me out so I change my way and I continue doing my other shopping but at that time my focus is only in grocery. After I…

An event as big as this, where a whole country stops purchasing goods would also receive global media coverage. Just the pure fact that Buy Nothing Day would receive media coverage would be a victory in itself, since the consequences of overconsumption would be seen on TVs around the world. Bustling city streets, hour-long lines, and retail store chaos: only one scenario explains the commonality between these situations, shopping on Black Friday. The Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity began in 2004 when a student asked Bryan Kemper, founder of Pro-Life Day of Silent Solidarity, what he could do to help end abortion. A thought then occurred to Bryan and slowly it has evolved into a day of protest that people choose to remain silent for those who never had a voice. The poster advocating for the movement is not very effective at persuading its audience to agree with the act of remaining silent to help end abortion.…

According to Anna Quindlen, the drumbeat that accompanied Black Friday this year was that numbers had to redeem us, that if enough, money was spent by shoppers it would indicate that things were not so bad after all. But what the economy required was at odds with a necessary epiphany. Because things are critical, many people have become hesitant to spend money on unimportant things. And in the process they began to realize that it’s all nothing.…
