Abstract
The aim of this paper is to provide a critical review of the article The Effect of Video Game Violence on Physiological Desensitization to Real-life Violence by Nicholas L. Carnagey, Craig A. Anderson, and Brad J. Bushman (2007). In this article Carnagey, Ander and Bushman experimentally examine the effects that violent video games have on those playing them, specifically in the area of physiological desensitization. It is the goal of this review to provide readers with an overall summary and critique of the article. This review will describe, discuss, and evaluate the key points of Carnagey, Anderson, and Bushman’s article and assess the methodology, results, and conclusions of the article.

Summary
In the introduction Carnagey, Ander and Bushman (2007) address the hot debate that’s developed over the years concerning the impact of video games, particularly violent video games within our society. The article assesses some different reasons that this debate has become so hearted, for instance over 85 percent of video games contain some level of violence currently. Sadly many of these games, even the violent ones, are actually marketed toward children. The article also attributes much of the debate’s escalation to the vast amount of research available that demonstrates a rise in aggression and other negative affects in children exposed to violent media. After addressing the abudance of research concerning negative affects the article points out the shortcomings of that research concerning the impact violent video games have on desensitization. This insight leads into the body of the article and further information on the topic of desensitization.
In the next section, Carnagey, Ander and Bushman (2007) discuss the overtly broad definition of desensitization

    In 1972, the Surgeon General issued the following warning on violent TV programs: "It is clear to me that the causal relationship between televised violence and antisocial behavior is sufficient to warrant appropriate and immediate remedial action…there comes a time when the data are sufficient to justify action: that time has come” (Steinfeld, 1972). Since the time that video games began to dominate the market, media has been investigated as one of the major sources of malevolent behaviors in society. “In the years since this Surgeon General warning was issued, hundreds of additional studies have shown a link between violent media exposure and aggression”(Anderson& Bushman, 2002).Although this warning related to television, it is a wonder if these same negative effects could be present in the use of violent video games. Although video games are touted as being responsible to the refinement and advancement of fine motor skills and creative thinking, there are some issues when it comes to violent video games. When compared with television, there are some overlapping concerns. There are some benefits to playing video games over television, however. While video games involve active play, television uses more passive interaction between the player and the media.     According to the article “Shooting in the Dark” author, Benedict Carey, states that studies today on violent video games show no concrete evidence on actually long term negative effects on gamers. Mr. Carey is not a researcher or scientist but is a veteran writer of neuroscience, neurology, and psychology. Throughout this article he gives factual evidence and quotes from scholarly sources such as doctors and researchers in the fields of behavior and psychology. The author gives ample explanation on evidence used from his sources to give the optimal understanding to the reader of the results and/or findings given by the sources.
