Cultural Artifact Speech Outline
Recall the time when your boss hands you a bonus check for a job well done. Remember that feeling of excitement and anticipation before you opened it? That is the exact same feeling that the lucky red envelopes during Lunar New Year’s brings to all those who receive one. Today I will be sharing with you fascinating facts about this long honored tradition in the Vietnamese culture. First I will present a brief history of the red envelopes and next I will share the fond memories I have of them during my childhood.

I. The history of how the lucky red envelopes came about.
A. Originally the red envelopes originated from China during the Qin Dynasty which lasted from 221 to 206 BC.
1. The elderly would thread coins with a red string in hopes that the money would ward off evil spirits and give them protection and good health.
2. According to Professor Maurer from the department of Anthropology at the University of California, Irvine, once the printing press became common, the tradition continued but instead of using thread and coins, it became red envelopes enclosed with money.

B. China greatly influences Vietnamese culture due to its orientation and military dominance.
1. Being located right under the vast lands of China, Vietnam is like China’s baby brother who imitates its older brother.
2. The meaning and significance in the Vietnamese culture resembles that of China’s, but differs in that only after the children wishes upon the elder many blessings will they then in return receive a red envelope from the elder.

II. As a little boy, the lucky red envelopes signified family bonding. A. All my uncles, aunts, and cousins gather at my grandparents’ house to receive these red envelopes during Lunar New Year’s. 1. Everyone gathered around the dinner table talking about all the ups and downs of the previous year. 2. One

Growing up in the United States, my mother's side of the family would annually host a day to pray for our deceased relatives. They suffered a distressing escape from the Vietnam War in order to integrate back into normal society. Despite some of my relatives say we had the fortune of a red envelope, numerous family members told me that the Communists caused us to suffer. At five years old, I believed everything they said; especially things from my parents because I was naïve. After all these years, I realized not all is true; my family only explained the negative side of the story without acknowledging the affirmative version of the Communists. Especially after reading Loung Ung’s First They Killed My Father, Communist Vietnam quite frankly seemed passive and amiable to the Cambodians and saved them from the Khmer Rouge. This crossed my thoughts on this Communist nation; I had two sources which were contrary. Therefore, I strive to understand the reasons why Vietnam liberated the Khmer people from the Cambodian Government yet they fought their own people. The lingering fear in my family needs elimination; they need the truth behind the works of Communist Vietnam.…

The Vietnamese people are an ethnic group originating from present day Northern Vietnam and Southern China. Although geographically and linguistically labeled as Southern Asians, long periods of Chinese domination and influence have placed the Vietnamese culturally closer to East Asians. The Vietnamese people culturally believe in myths and the supernatural. According to the Thai and Vietnamese Proverbs and common expressions, religion, specifically Buddhism and local beliefs, have a strong influence on their proverbs. Ethnographic Museums

In this essay, I will argue that ethnographic museums privilege viewing, at the expense of other senses. I will further argue that by privileging the visual, ethnographic museums become problematic in two ways- firstly, by not accurately representing the cultures they are supposed to be exhibiting, and secondly, by limiting the experience of museum-goers who may be visually impaired or otherwise unable to visit museums that are purely mono-sensorial. After outlining and discussing the problems associated with ocularcentric post-colonial museums, I will offer a few solutions to these problems.
The majority of colonial museums privileged viewing and the visual. In the 17th and 18th century, Europeans believed reason and sensuality to be opposing…

In “Rebel Music”, Daniel Felsenfeld delves into the inspirations he has drawn from music in his childhood. He tells of the struggles he experienced and the lack of inspiration from mandatory piano lessons from Ms. Shimizu. Although he dazzled her every time, he never felt connected to the music. Felsenfeld reminisced, “I was experiencing a personal drought, an acrid lack of culture of all kinds, especially music” (Felsenfeld 624). After he heard Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony while with a friend, he had an epiphany. He felt that in this moment, he heard music for the first time. From then on, he became obsessed and revolved his entire life around it. He then went on to become a composer despite his non-musical family background. Felsenfeld’s passion for music as a child encouraged him to be the person he is today, which is similar to the way gymnastics influenced my life. Gymnastics was a huge part of my life growing up, and I realize now that the sport allowed me to learn the valuable traits I use today. Being a gymnast taught me many things but especially how to be dedicated, how to be a team player and how to never give up.…

The Vietnamese culture, is a rich heritage on many different levels, one of the best ways to view Vietnamese culture is to look at the system of yin and yang. On one side you have the yang the more male side that has more of a fondness towards hierarchy where the father or the eldest male is the leader of the family with conventional rules to follow depending on their social roles. On the other hand you have the yin moving towards human equality, female contribution, and more of an emphasis on feelings. Yin and yang are the basis for Vietnamese family life and even government policy.…

We are so interested in the things that go on in the world today that the common responsibilities like homework, school, and sometimes-even family are forgotten. To get ready for this celebration, a number of items must be bought and prepared. It is not happened to be called “National cleaning festival” because everyone, especially moms, wants their houses to be as cleanest as possible to welcome a new year coming. This hard-working task seemed to disappoint anyone but it was not the same to me. What made me more interested was to decorate my house with peach blossoms, lanterns and flowers. Hardly a single word could describe my parents’ pride when they saw my beautiful decoration. Moreover, dad and mom usually bought new clothes for me and my brother as small gifts to celebrate New Year Eve with brand-new looks. Another rationale for the preparation for Tet lies in “chung cake”. Family members gathered together around cooking fire for not only boiling this special cake but also talking and feeling the cozy atmosphere with the whole family after a busy year… Preparation for Tet really brought us a great deal of joys and happiness.…
