In the essay, “Consider the Lobster,” David Foster Wallace describes what it is like to attend the Maine Lobster Festival. He also goes off on a tangent about the history of the lobster and how the delicacy has evolved. He not only describes the atmosphere but talks about the range of people attending, and how some of those attending raise the question of whether cooking a live lobster poses a moral dilemma (2004).…
It’s Friday night and after a grueling week at work, a gentleman decides to treat his girlfriend to a relaxing dinner at a nice seafood restaurant. They decide to splurge and order a very expensive lobster dish. The bill arrives and it is pricey. However, they think it’s worth it because they believe they have just eaten fresh quality “lobster”. Unfortunately, there is a chance that the lobster is a cheap substitute. “It emerged that in thirty five percent of lobster dishes, there are cheaper substitute seafood instead.”(Inside Edition). Suddenly, people aren’t quite as excited about the expensive lobster dish they just purchased. Muckraking still exists in 2016 as evidenced in Inside Edition’s…

The crab was originated in Europe, and nevertheless made its way to the United States in the 1800’s, by riding across the Atlantic ocean on a ship. Though the author wanted to put the focus on capitalism, most people were more interested/disgusted by the way the meat was processed and sold. “For it was the custom, as they found, whenever meat was so spoiled that it could not be used for anything else, either to can it or else to chop it up into sausage.”2…
Imagine a place where there is no FDA and no control on what goes into food. A place where people think they are eating sausage but, in actuality, they are eating feces! This “place” was America in 1906 and the years before. For years and years, ordinary citizens had no idea of the horrors that happened behind the scenes of the meatpacking industry. That was until “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair. This book unmasked the monstrosity that was the meatpacking industry and impacted audiences like no other book has. Sinclair used graphic depictions such as dead rats being put in the food and spoiled meat still being used to impact the audience and achieve his purpose.…
In Jonathan Safron Foer's essay “Let Them Eat Dog” and “Consider the Lobster” by David Foster Wallace, the voice the writer chose to exhibit is very conversational and casual. Wallace details the Maine Lobster Fest in almost photographic detail, being so precise that one can almost smell the lobster rolls and taste the butter on sticky fingers. He peppers his essay with surprising facts about the lobster business such as how lobster was originally eaten only by the very poor and institutionalized. The fish however, are left to die in the net, wasted.…
At first whenever you look at a similar story, it may have been told about the body eating. It is no doubt that humankind have always thought themselves to be on top of the food chain. It is all about the survival of the fittest and although the humankind may not be able to out-run, out-swim or over-power certain animals in the animal kingdom they are able to invent devices which may assist them in being on the “top”. There is always a fear that the hunter would be the hunted. This fear is reflected in movies involving animals because most horror movies involving animals include a reversal of the power relations between human and animal. (Scholtmeijer, 1992) This essay will analyse the human-animal relationship as well the representation of animals in the movie Piranha 3D. Piranha 3D is a movie about prehistoric man-eating fishes which were set free by a sudden underwater tremor, bringing together a group of strangers in a fight for survival. The movie reflects on the struggle that humankind have in maintaining the dominant upper hand in the role of the hunter and hunted.…
