The following questions are listed chronologically by subjects. It is hoped that clues as to how subjects in United States History can be presented analytically can be identified by studying this list. Many of the questions required students to compare two or more periods of history, and these questions appear in each period specified in the essay. The questions are placed under the titles of the topics I use in my U.S. History A.P. course. I. The Founding of the Colonies, 1607-1688 1. "Throughout the Colonial period, economic concerns had more to do with the settling of British North America than did religious concerns." Assess the validity of this statement with specific reference to economic and religious concerns. (1990, question 2) 2. "Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by people of English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies.
