Homecoming Queen!

It is every little girl’s dream to someday become a Princess, or better yet a Queen. This usually happens when they watch Disney movies such as Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast. Children often use these people as role models. But for Lindsay, there was a whole different meaning behind those words. She learned that to become one of those lucky people, she had to give a little first. When Lindsay was in Kindergarten, she had the privilege of being part of the 1999 Homecoming Royalty as the crown bearer. She was so honored that she was selected over all the other girls in her class as the one that the principal wanted to carry the beautiful shiny crown. When that day came, she was dressed in a cute white dress that hung to her knees, and her hair was curled beautifully. She was so happy that she was getting to do this, but her knees started to tremble. As the Homecoming court slowly started making their way out on the Norfork Gymnasium floor, Lindsay began getting nervous. It would soon be here turn to walk out on that floor with that red velvet pillow. She hoped that she would not trip and fall, because if she broke the crown, the Queen would be very upset with her. Everything went great! Lindsay did not trip, and the Queen was great! When Lindsay woke up the next morning, she was a senior in High School. She looked in the mirror and saw herself all grown up. Where had the time gone? Who is this stunning, tall blonde looking in the mirror at me? I’m still little, or so she thought. Twelve years after Lindsay was in Homecoming, she was once again introduced to it. Lindsay was a five foot nine-inch senior on the Norfork Lady Panthers starting line up, and boy did she love basketball! When that whistle blew, she was chasing that ball from the time it left the refs hand until the time that dreadful out of time buzzard blew. Lindsay had such a passion for basketball, and everyone could tell. It was time

Her friends looked at Carlos then looked at dolly they didn't know what was going on. Carlos then looked at her and giggled making a joke, “Oh so i guess my ubers here,” they both laughed. Many think that narrative and descriptive styles of writing are one in the same, but they are not. Although they complement each other for a complete story; you can successfully write using one style without the other. The authors Connell, C.M. & Sole, K. define narrative writing as, "Narration is storytelling from the perspective of a narrator, and the story may be true, false, imaginary, or a combination." (2013, chapter 6.3). When you tell a story you want your readers to experience it through your words as if they were there when it happened. Connell, C.M. & Sole, K. define descriptive writing as, "Description is a pattern of writing that can be defined as painting pictures with words." (2013, chapter 6.4). A descriptive story leaves no detail unrevealed and appeals to all of your senses. When comparing Maya Angelou's descriptive poem "Caged Bird" and Judy Brady's narrative essay "I Want a Wife", it is clear that there many similarities and differences between the two styles of writing. However, because Maya Angelou's poem has descriptive language that appeals to your five senses, specific detail descriptions and uses figurative language to compare the unfamiliar with something more familiar it makes it a superior piece of literature.…

She had tried to prepare herself for this very moment, if she gets it great, if she doesn’t it won’t be the end of the world, but at this moment all Lainey could think of was performing the role of Princess Clara. Lainey retraced her finger over and over again, following the dotted line from Lainey Clark to Princess Clara on both cast sheets. She could hardly believe that her dream had just come true. She was overwhelmed by the embrace of her closest dance friends Elliana, Faith, and Jenny. Lainey’s eyes began to swell with tears. She couldn’t explain this kind of feeling. She had grown up looking up to the senior girls who performed Princess Clara and now that girl was her. So many hours of intense practice had gone into achieving this role and she couldn’t quite grasp that it was really happening. “We start in ten minutes,” said Sergey as he passed the group of girls. Sergey was the owner of Salt Creek Ballet, Lainey’s dance school. He owns the school with his wife Zhanna, and had been Lainey’s teacher for four years now. He was not one to celebrate or hug Lainey for receiving the role, he is tough and straight to the…

It was a scorching, radiant, fall day on September 10th when Tiffany and her teammates were at soccer practice. There were two goals, one on each side of the school’s 100 foot long and 60-foot wide soccer field. The school was to the left, a few hundred feet away, and a cramped shed was to the right. The wind was at her back as the starting forward, Tiffany, was swiftly dribbling on a breakaway to the other team’s goal, her long brown hair blowing behind her and her long legs were moving as fast as they could. Her arms were pumping hard when she was about ready to shoot the ball. All of the sudden, blonde hair came flying right past her on the ground as her best friend Cierra, small but mighty, came out of nowhere and slide tackled her down, kicking the ball out of bounds and knocking Tiffany down with it. The girls had gotten up laughing as Cierra asked, “Are you okay? Sorry, I was aiming for the ball.”…

My house is like heroin, almost like a painless experience that many cannot get enough of. We are often exploited by my overdramatic brother with ADHD and a strong case of impulsiveness. Nevertheless, we are always busy, so much that I think that our day is actually longer than the average twenty-four hour day. In fact, I know my parents are more entertaining than most because there is always something to do or someplace we need to go. It seems that they only reason we have a house is to sleep. Most times my parents will not even tell us the plans for the week and it often comes to us as a surprise. My life is exceedingly rapid that sometimes I need to calm down, take a step back and see what is passing me by. With excessively controlling parents who supply me with assiduous academic possibilities and a monumental life moment, I can say that I have a great life.…

Beads of sweat trickled down my face as the sweltering sun continued to beat on down on me. The waves crashing rhythmically on the shore were tempting me to enter those enticing waters to cool off. But, no. I could not. I was here for a job. A job that needed me to stand here with my heavy makeup bag and watch others have a dip in the cool waters while being photographed and filmed.…

Rocketing across the water, the beach and sky blur into one. But in my mind everything is still, even calm in fact. My eyes dart around. I see men. Pain and panic fill their eyes. Some tremble as if catching a fever. Other soldiers clutch on to their weapons as if gripping onto their mother’s hand when learning how to walk. Some soldiers drink from their canteens, as if it’s the last drink to enter their bodies. I feel my heart race, blood pump through my veins. The Captain yells, “30 seconds! Good luck, men. May God be with you and I’ll see you on the beach!”…

be dealt with. But, in reality, this is seldom the case. The county courthouse looks like a typical courthouse. A Romanesque building, three stories high, with large pillars in the front, eloped in ivy which crawled up one side of the building, masqueraded by a fertile green, manicured, immaculately kept courtyard, blockaded with a vast variety of flowers and plants.…

I casually walked down the stairs, and I saw something on the table. Confused at what it was, I walked closer. It was a shiny, small, white slip of paper. When I got closer, I realized it was a ticket to the Bulls game. My head exploded like a balloon. My face lit up like a light bulb because of how happy I was. I never went to a Bulls game before and I was really excited. I liked the Bulls a lot and I had a lot of Bulls clothing except I never really watched any of the games and I didn’t know many players. Either way, I wanted to thank him. So, since we was at work, I called him. I’m sitting at the table listening to the phone ring as the inside of me is screaming with joy, jumping around, and my heart is beating faster than a tornado.” I’m…

Sailing on the beautiful shiny blue ocean is relaxing. The sun is shining so bright that the water requies. Sailing is one sport that can be considered a holistic endeavor of athleticism blended with the natural elements of life. One can be taken to another mental dimension if you allow your mind to escape to the beauty of the water, the warmth of the sun, and the wind. You can escape in the flow of the waves, the subtleness of the fresh air whisking across your face and listening to the wind catch your sail moving you to new unchartered space in the vast ocean. I have experienced sailing as a young boy, and I was able to experience both the beauty of sailing in the natural environment of Hawaii, and also as a sportsman competing in the Junior Olympic competition. The combination of athleticism and nature is undeniable in the sport of Sailing. The sailing and maneuvering of boat in the water, and embracing the wind to become one with the ocean is to truly experience the beauty of the sport. In the silence between the waves you may allow yourself to become vulnerable to peace of the ocean, however, if you remain silent too long the ocean will awaken your senses and test your skills to keep your boat upright as you sail to your destination.…

This essay is to compare-contrast a narrative and descriptive essay The essays I chose were, “Are the Rich Happy?” written by Stephen Leacock (1916) for the narrative essay and “Homeless” written by Anna Quindlen (n.d.) for the descriptive essay. The title of both essays is what caught my eye and the reason why I read them. Although, I enjoyed reading both essays, I felt the descriptive essay “Homeless” had more value and was the better read. Therefore, in this essay, I am going to compare/contrast the author’s purpose, the difference in their use of descriptive language, and the impact on the reader’s that each author intended to accomplish through the essay that they wrote. I also plan to show why, in the case of these two essays, I felt that the descriptive essay “Homeless” was the better read.…

For most of winter break, I was pretty excited to come back to school, but when the day finally arrived, I've got to admit, I was suddenly homesick. I hadn’t left yet, but I felt sick, really sick. Everything I ate shot back up, and it got to the point where I couldn’t eat anything, and yet I still had troubles keeping my insides from coming back up. I was supposed to head back later that Tuesday night, but instead I went to the doctor and found out I had Influenza A. Therefore I wasn’t able to go back for another week. I was excited at first because I got to stay home, and wouldn’t have to go back to school for a couple more days! But at the same time I was sick and wouldn’t really get to enjoy being home. While having the flu there was a strange sensation going through my body, and I just ached, there was pressure in my face, my sinuses were like a volcano about to erupt, I had difficulty focusing, I felt like I had been hit by a train, and I was spaced out. I was really glad that I got sick while I was still home so my mom could take care of me, instead of being at college all miserable lying in my dorm room.…

The day my sister left for England, something inside of me woke up. It felt like the desert sand being surprised by cool wet rain, my amazement and surprise was just the same. The reality that this was really happening, we really were being separated, all became too much for me. As close as two siblings could be, it is often difficult to distinguish between Kenza and I. One wonders, where does Kenza start, and where do I begin? Who developed the sarcastic wit, and who picked it up as the years went by? My life is so extraordinary linked to this woman. She is vibrant, she is intelligent. She is beauty that is discovered in the rarest of places, she is the lyrics in that sad song. She is the stars that I wish upon, and she is the cure to every sickness I possess.…
