Did Atlantis Really Exist?
Did Atlantis Exist? Known as one of the world’s greatest mysteries, Atlantis is a legend written by the Greek philosopher Plato. The legend was written thousands of years ago, but it is still talked about today (Smith Michael and Debora Smith). Scholars often argue that Atlantis existed, but those that do not agree remind those scholars that there is no evidence to support that Atlantis ever existed and that Plato “added fantasy and excitement to his writings” (“Atlantis”). The question is, how could the city disappear in one night? Researchers say that Atlantis never disappeared because it did not exist. Atlantis, the city said to be “beautiful and idyllic”, that has been said to have sunken by a “cataclysmic natural disaster”, has been located by many scientist, researchers and historians in various locations all over the world (“Lost Island”). Some of those locations include “Africa, at the bottom of the Caribean Sea, Spain, Ireland”, and in many other locations (“Atlantis”). Researchers base their findings on the geographical data that Plato provided, in which he said that Atlantis was “300 miles long” and “200 miles wide” (“Lost Island”). Some researchers explain that with the little information that they have about the city, it is not easy to “find a sunken city” that they do not know if it ever existed (“Atlantis”). Other researchers believe that Atlantis was inspired by a “Greek island called Santorini, where a volcanic eruption buried an ancient civilization around 1500 B. C. (Smith Michael and Debora Smith). But once again, where is the evidence? No one has found any supporting evidence or clues that suggest that Atlantis existed and the “only historical information found comes from Plato, who wrote about Atlantis in two ancient texts in which there is a lot of fantasy” (Smith Michael and Debora Smith). Since Plato wrote about Atlantis thousands of years ago experts cannot figure out if Atlantis is a legend or not (“Lost Island”). Experts explain,

The material is presented in three parts. The first section introduces students to archaeology and pseudoarchaeology (literally “fake archaeology”), along with the basic concepts of science and anthropology that are necessary for a full understanding of both of these pursuits. In the second part, we apply the lessons of the first section to a series of pseudoarchaeological claims, ranging from the Cardiff Giant and Piltdown hoax to Atlantis and the Crystal Skull. We ask why do people make such claims, and why does the public embrace them? The third part surveys the real marvels of the ancient past, from Easter Island and Machu Picchu to Stonehenge and the Great Zimbabwe. We…

“Ordinarily, if someone has a theory which involves radical departure from what the experts have professed, he is expected to defend his position by providing evidence in its support.” Professor Mary Lefkowitz makes this statement in her book Not Out of Africa, a response to Martin Bernal’s Black Athena. Bernal’s book argues that Ancient Egypt along with other civilizations “… played fundamental roles in the formation of Ancient Greece.” Lefkowitz, being a classical scholar disagrees with Bernal as well as Dr. Yosef A. A. ben-Jochannan’s claim that Aristotle stole his philosophy from the Library of Alexandria and the notion that Socrates was black. Although Lefkowitz attempts to refute these arguments, the evidence she uses to support her claims are very weak and, as a result, detrimental to her argument.…

There is a thin line which divides art from archeological remnants. Hence some of the things we see as material accumulation of an entire site may have been manipulated or embellished. One of the best examples here is the case of Sir Arthur Evans, who has been accused after the findings of Crete’ Knossos. He confirmed in one of his four volume overview that some of the art was just simple forgeries, while others were partial reconstructions. His site interpretations were highly drawn from post –Bronze age and ancient Greek mythology and it was with his imagination that allowed him to develop and give to the world the much manipulated and hampered pieces of history.…

    Minoan Disappearance

The Minoan civilization was one of prosperity and influence, until its sudden disappearance from the civilized world. Most civilizations go through a pattern of chaos, adjustment and finally balance. The Minoans, however, had balance, and then chaos hit and the adjustment ended up being their finite disappearance. In the Golden Age of Athens in the 5th century, the Minoans were the stuff of legend, remaining so until the discovery of the ruins of Knossos in the 1900’s by British Archaeologist Arthur Evans. The cause of the collapse of the Minoans had to be something of huge catastrophic proportions; nothing else could cause the entirety of a civilization to disappear within 50 years,…

After 1200 years, the long lost Egyptian city Thonis-Heracleion was finally unearthed near Alexandria. Thonis-Heracleion was beginning to become extinct to memory of mankind. The only written evidence of this place was preserved in ancient classic texts and inscriptions found by archaeologists. The existence of this mythical city was confirmed to be true when discovered in the year 2000 by archaeologist Franck Goddio and the European institute for underwater archaeology. Thonis-Heracleion was a prosperous city before it was engulfed by the sea many years ago. It is believed that the city was submerged underwater due to subsiding of soil causing the land to slowly segregate as well as contribution from high rise in sea level. However, the true cause is still yet to be known.…
