Discuss The Importance Of The First Amendment In America
The United States of America has always been referred to as “the land of the free”. Although we are not completely “free”, as a democracy, the United States stresses the importance of equality among its citizens. The U.S. constitution guarantees each and every American basic civil rights which in turn gives our country structure, function, and some power to the people. Every unique person will have rights they feel are more important to them than others depending on our views, attitudes, and ethics. A highly well-known right given to American’s is the freedom of speech which stems from the first amendment. This prohibits the government from creating any laws that could stop the people from exercising their feelings, or speaking their thoughts. American’s deserve the right to share their opinions as well as criticize our government. The first amendment is often seen as our most important right as American’s. In some countries, citizens are not allowed to criticize or question their government without the fear of being imprisoned. This right is important because it gives American’s the opportunity to give their own personal ideas and inventions regarding the government which creates the existence of multiple points of view. It assures us that our government accurately proves our guilt before one is sentenced to prison. It also assures that we are all guaranteed an equal trial, and people cannot be accused and locked up because the hatred and greed of others. The death penalty also proves the importance of the sixth amendment. The sixth amendment, especially the right to counsel, protects us from an unfair trial and criminal persecution. It would be a horrible event if the innocent were found guilty and given the death penalty. Without the sixth amendment, our life, reputation, and our future would be in the hands of the court
