Dr. Seuss Day: A Short Story
I had tossed and turned all night. I sprang out of my bed, ran down the hall to my parents room and jumped onto their bed. “Mom! Wake up! Mom!” I bellowed while attempting to her open her eyes with my small hands. “Alyssa, what’s wrong?” My mom answered half asleep. “It’s Dr. Seuss Day!” I screamed while jumping up and down on her bed. I couldn’t quite see her face, but I’m sure she wore a disapproving look. “Alyssa! You need to be quiet, the baby is sleeping!” I was so excited about my first Dr. Seuss day at school that I had forgotten about my baby sister sleeping down the hall. “Sorry Mommy,” I said disappointed in myself.
I began to walk back to my room when my mom nonchalantly said, “Don’t forget to wear your Cat In The Hat shirt

We walked in and sat down by the cone assigned to our class and waited for the other classes to come in. Between the bright lights, kids talking, the small space given to each class and the smell of floor cleaner, I felt nauseous. I could feel my breakfast coming up out of my stomach.
I raced over by the teachers who were standing in a circle chatting about the activities planned. I ran up to my teacher and blurted out, “Mrs. Bone! I don’t feel good, I think I’m going to…” Without being able to finish my sentence, I was throwing up into my hat. All over. Kids laughed, teachers were shaken and I was disappointed in myself for not keeping my promise of not getting my hat dirty.
Together, Mrs. Bone and I took the walk of shame through the gym and into the nurse's office where I was picked up by my mom. Although she wasn’t thrilled I was sick, she wasn’t concerned about my hat. “Grandma will understand,” she explained.
Although I was humiliated by what happened that day, it helped to shape me as a person. I now know the importance of forgiveness and am able to relate to the embarrassment of others. That day may have ruined my hat, but it hasn’t ruined

I choose Jean Louise Finch to read out the first line, when I discovered she could read. I then made her read My First Reader and the stock-market quotations from The Mobile Register aloud. I was shocked that Jean was literate but I told her not to tell her father not to teach her anymore as it would interfere with her reading. Jean then replied to me trying to tell me that her father hadn’t taught her anything, I just smiled and shook my head somebody had obviously taught her, she wasn’t born reading The Mobile Register. Jean then told me Jem had taught her and he read a book to her where she was Bullfinch instead of Finch. Jem said she got swapped when she was born. She was about to carry on but I just interrupted her, she was quite clearly lying to me so I told her again to tell her father not to teach her anymore because it is better to begin reading with a fresh mind and that I will try and undo the damage. Her father does not know how to teach properly. At least at the end of it she mumbled sorry to me but then again it was her fathers fault for teaching her in…

“Clide, come on. You’re going to be late! GET UP!” screeched the woman of the house, my mom Sandra. I’m taking my time as usual, dragging my feet off my cosy bed as my numb arms reach for my drawer. Our family isn’t very rich, so I don’t have a wide range of clothes to pick from. I wear a black top and jeans, the usual. My mom says that black makes my eyes standout since they’re ever green. I quickly brush my hair even though they always look messy regardless of the amount of times I take showers. “Clide, don’t make me come up there!” “It’s the first day! You must make a good impression!” “Jeez Mom, I’m coming!” I shout as I slide down the stair handles. Although mom always told me to not do it, I have a habit of not listening to her. I quickly…

Have you ever imagined of a room that sent such a good vibe that you thought it was too good to be true? Well, that is how this lunchroom was. When I walked in the first thing I say was the bright lit faces of the john Adams middle school students.Their faces were so astonishing that it but a big smile on my face. The poster filled walls were a bright baby blue with a hint of green. The tables were stunning. The colors were so remarkable that they were almost blinding. The pillars that stood high were covered with flyers of all colors. But the best thing of all was the smell coming from the cafeteria. It smelled like fresh pizza out of the oven. But what they were serving was much better than pizza, it was cheesy bread sticks. As my waiter…

“You are in the hospital, Marielle.” she replied quite calmly, especially considering how she had just told me that I was in the HOSPITAL! “Um… this is a dream… right?” I asked, still confused as to how I could have gone from LL Bean to the hospital so quickly, without remembering anything. “No sweetie, you collapsed at LL Bean, and someone called 911, so we took you to the hospital. You have been asleep for quite a while. Your parents went home for the night, but should be back in a few hours.” She explained. “Somehow,” I thought, “she has kept the same face through this whole conversation.” But then I realized that there were tubes coming out of me and literally, I mean literally, as in, I actually did this… I screamed! The nurse must have thought that I was dying or something, because for once, her facial expression changed. A few hours later, Mom and Dad came bursting in. I wasn’t all that surprised to see them, especially considering that I had just been watching TV for the past 4 hours. “Hi Mom, hi Dad,” I said to them. “Oh! Thank goodness you’re awake!” my dad replied quickly. “Can someone please tell me what’s wrong with me sometime soon?” I asked them with qute a bit of…

It was a week into my senior year in Ganesha High School. Walking into my third period AVID class, right after our 10 minute nutrition break, everybody, rowdy and noisy, talked about what they had done that weekend or what they had seen at break. As usual I walked towards my seat and as usual it was a task. My school bag was hanging on my side and I had my breakfast box that was filled with a milk carton, an apple, and a packaged bread in my hand; I walked and tried not to trip over the carelessly left bags on the isle. People stood up even after the bell had rung and the noise level was still high. I finally got to my seat; first row, first seat, right next to the teacher’s desk in which he had his computer. I put my bag down on the floor and put my breakfast box on top of my desk. The teacher, Mr. Mariles, came in and everybody took their seat, the noise level lowered distinctively. I turned over to face my friend who was sitting behind me. I whispered to her “Do you know what we’re doing in class today?” she whispered back “I think we are working on our personal statement.” I turned to face the front of the class, with a disgusted expression on my face. The teacher then started to explain what we were going to do that day. He had a smile in his face and was making hand movements all over the…

The second thing that happened, during period 2, the students were learning how to open lockers. I was standing there trying to open my locker. I couldn't open my locker. I couldn't open my locker that period until my homeroom teacher opened it for me. I can't tell you how stupid I felt when my Ms. Shores opened my locker in one try and I couldn't even open in like the 50 tries I did. When I went to P.E., they told us that we were not going to get our locker until we start to dress. I was really happy because I didn't need to deal with another locker problem for a couple of weeks.…
