Effect of Facebook
The Effect of Facebook and Social Media on a Society

There is always a lot of talk about whether Facebook and other social media have a positive or a negative impact on a society. In order to make a statement I decided to find the meaning of social media in the dictionary. According to Wikipedia.org social media include web-based and mobile based technologies which are used to turn communication into interactive dialogue among organizations, communities, and individuals. Wikipedia.org also gives some classifications of social media, there are: Internet forums, social blogs, podcasts, and social networking (Facebook, Twitter, etc.) According to the dictionary interpretation there is no doubt that social media together with Facebook have a tremendous influence on people’s lives. However, it is not right to state that the influence on the society is only positive or negative, it is both.
There are a lot of people registered on Facebook. All of them pursue different goals. First of all, social networking helps to maintain the relationship between people. For example, having an account on Facebook, or Twitter gives a great opportunity to keep in touch with relatives who live abroad, or friends who move to another city, or state. There are a lot of circumstances such as job, school, or family, due to which we do not have an opportunity to meet with the friends. In this case social network becomes an important link that connects people.
Secondly, social media and networking help to obtain relevant information fast. Due to the dictionary social media used to turn communication into a dialogue among the organizations. Owing to the network mobility there are no such problems as receiving important mail late, or losing it.
Finally, social media have a great impact on educational process. For example, emailing to a professor gives a student an opportunity to receive an additional material about an assignment. Students use material from YouTube for their projects. Teachers also use many online tools while explaining the material. Christine Greenhowan, the author of an article Social networking at Schools states: “ By understanding how students may be positively using these networking technologies in their daily lives and where the as-yet-unrecognized educational opportunities are, we can help make schools even more relevant, connected, and meaningful to kids."
However, despite all the positive sides Facebook and social media have a negative influence also. For instance, teenagers may have hundreds of friends on Facebook. They talk with each other every day, share interesting blogs on each other’s pages. Nevertheless, the necessity of face to face communication can be lost. Due to being busy at work some parents use video-games or cartoons as babysitters for their kids. But a lot of them are not meant for children. Because of the video-games’ graphic kids may lose their life values and a sense of reality. For example, there is a character named Kenny in South Park cartoon gets killed almost in every episode, due to that death is a temporary phenomenon for some children.
All in all, Facebook and social media may have both positive and negative impacts on the society. People should realize that time they spend while chatting on Facebook, or playing internet games could be used differently. Moments that we share with our loved ones can be unforgettable.

(procon.org) If a child went missing, law enforcement uses social media to get the word out and inform people about the missing child. Law enforcement also use social media to inform people if a criminal got loose. If a criminal were to escape, they use social media to help catch and prosecute the criminal. Social media is also much faster at sending messages, rather than fifty years ago, you had to mail a letter to communicate with them. This is especially innovative because if you have to tell someone something that is an emergency or is very urgent and they are four hours away it is much more convenient to send a message on facebook.…

Some advantages in the use of social media would be that it's an excellent tool for gathering/obtaining information. A good example would be the medical field: If you're travelling out of town/out of the country and you're hurt, doctors are able to pull up your records to obtain vital information in your medical history. For example: it may list medications you're allergic to and/or it can assist in ways to treat you. Another advantage would be the ability to connect with family and friends everywhere. Most computers have web cams attached to them. With this capability, all parties are able to see and talk to one another. For example: my family sets dates and times in advance so that my brother at college, my father who travels extensively abroad and family members at home are able to get onto their computers and we're able to see and talk to each other. This method is called skyping. Another method now available is the ability to “tango” (doing the same thing but through your cell phones). People are now able to telecommute which allows people to work comfortably from home. Telecommuting also reduces traffic on the streets and well as the elimination of stress/tension due to traffic and/or time constraints (getting to work on time). Lastly, social media is an essential learning tool in that students can do all of their research for their classes online, take courses rather than attending classes on campus, communicate with your professors online and, thus, increasing the abilitly for all people (including stay-at-home moms) to progress educationally.…

There are many benefits to Facebook. Facebook is the quick, easy way to keep up to date with events that happen every day. Once a person creates an account, they can add their friends and therefore look at the page that is created by that person and see their posts. When a person “posts” something it means that they are writing anything they want for all their friends to see, from song lyrics, to what their plans are for the day, to angry outbursts with a lot of curse words associated. The posts pop on the community wall so a person doesn’t have to go to each individual’s page to see their plans. This feature is beneficial because it allows a friend to discover plans and therefore work with, or around them to be able to see or communicate with that person without having to go through to hassle of keeping in touch every hour or having to send a text to twenty of your friends about what you’re doing that day. Another benefit of Facebook is it allows a person to keep in touch even through long distances. For example, if a person lives across the country, it is difficult to coordinate the time difference, and therefore makes it hard to have phone conversation or text repeatedly back and forth unless it is at a set time that is consensual for both parties. Facebook allows people to keep in touch on each person’s own time through wall posts, and messages, this is…
