Energy Conservation
Introduction
Energy conservation is very important in to not only the community but also the world. By conserving energy you will not only be helping your bottom line by reducing you energy bills but you will also be helping the world 's environment. An average savings of up to forty percent can be achieved though a properly implemented energy conservation plan
Renewable vs. Nonrenewable Resources
Renewable energy sources are sources that are self-sustaining. Nonrenewable energy sources are commonly called fossil fuels. In general non-renewable sources generate polluting emissions and renewable sources are cleaner. Most of the energy sources use today, about 94 percent, are nonrenewable sources. Methods to conserve and help the environment
One area that you can reduce your energy consumption is simply adjusting your thermostat to between 65 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. In addition to setting the thermostat to as low a temperature that feels comfortable, you should also set the temperature down by as much as ten degrees at night or when there is no one home. You should also set the temperature down to between 50 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit when there is going to be no one home for over a 24 hour period such as when you go on vacation. Installing a programmable thermostat will allow you to set programs to achieve the above recommendations to reduce your energy consumption.
Another area that energy conservation can be achieved is how you us your major appliances. You should keep your refrigerator between 37 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit and the freezer section at around 5 Fahrenheit in addition you should keep any stand alone freezers at around 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Also replacing gas pilot light appliances with electric ignition systems, and the flame on the same units should be adjusted so that it burns blue not yellow. Other appliances that energy conservation can be practiced on are your dishwasher by allowing the dishes to air dry rather than using the drying

The United States leaves a huge carbon footprint through energy use, this can be reduced by: building energy efficient homes, reducing motor vehicle use, and recycling more. Some energy related activities were the lowering energy costs in the home. People sometimes think this to be hard but here are some good steps to follow to make it seem it easier. Reset the water heater thermostat, people do not always realize that most water heaters heat water to a set temperature and then hold it there, meaning that throughout the day and night the water heater cycles on and off, just maintaining that already set temperature. If we were to go the water heater and lower the setting a few degrees it can often save half as much energy and the chances are turning down the temperature won’t even be noticeable to most members of the family. Another way to lower energy costs in the home is with a programmable thermostat for heating the home. Just like the water heater maintains a set temperature even when it is not being used a thermostat does the exact same thing for your entire home. When we are just letting it cool off (or warm up) when there is no one awake can save energy and money as well. By letting the house cool on its own and not turning up the thermostat this can save you money. This change will usually pay for itself in around three years. We also have attic and wall insulation where there is a difference between the indoor and outdoor temperate, the more energy this will take to maintain a temperature of comfort in our homes. By adding insulation between the indoors and the outdoors we are reducing the energy demand. This of course depends on where you live, because the savings from insulating your walls and attic could almost double the savings. This will pay back in 3 ½ years to 12 years…

Anything from driving less to turning off a light in a room can help the cause. Conservation methods take thought, commitment, and changes to everyday lives to make a difference. In order to conserve energy, consumers need to be aware of their daily usage and find ways to cut the usage down. Conservation of energy includes using less gasoline, electricity, and non-renewable resources. It also involves finding and producing alternative energy, recycling and home improvements. Not all methods of energy conservation will negatively impact the daily routines of people. With a little consideration and dedication to reduce energy consumption, everyone can do their part.…

We as humans can do our part personally to contribute in energy conservation and helping to sustain the environment through using more energy efficient appliances which can be a bit costly at first but will save energy, the environment, and ourselves money in the long run. We as consumers can purchase compact fluorescent light bulbs that use less energy and last longer than incandescent light bulbs. And the next time you’re looking to purchase a new vehicle that is fuel efficient like a hybrid car which combines gasoline engines and electric motors. I think knowledge is power when it comes to each person doing their part so feel free to engage in more research on…

Nonetheless, saving energy not only benefits the planet, but our ‘pockets’ as well. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a simple task like replacing the light bulbs in your home can save up “75% energy of the 10% home energy costs.” Or simply unplugging electronics and appliances when not in use – a task made easier by using multiple-outlet strips, which can turn everything off with the flip of a switch – can save you money. For example, Leaving a computer on all day can cost about “21 cents per day, or about $75 per year” (U.S. Department of energy). Also, according to Goldemberg’s article “Energy for the New Millennium”, 78% of CO2 and 23% of methane is expelled from energy activities which are ultimately major contributors to indoor air pollution, urban air pollution, acidification and global…

Some changes I can make that would reduce my impact on my use of energy land is unplugging electronic devices when I am not using them or completely turning off the power bars when I am not home. Turning off my power bars will not only lower my use of energy land but also my home’s electricity bill. According to The Ontario Ministry of Energy website, electrical devices always use electricity when they are plugged in even if they are turned off, called “phantom power.” A laptop still uses 18.6 kWh/y (kilowatt hours per year) when idle/sleep/off mode plugged in. A television uses 11.4 kWh/y when turned off. (Ontario Ministry of Energy, 2016) If you unplugged just both of these devices, you would save 30 kWh/y. Another change I can make with my electrical devices and appliances is to use them during off-peak or mid-peak periods of the day. Ontario uses time-of-use pricing to reflect the costs of producing the electricity at different times of the day. There are three periods: off-peak, mid-peak and on-peak. Off-peak times are when energy demand is low and less expensive sources of energy are used. Mid-peak is when the cost and demand of energy are moderate. On peak is when electricity demand is highest and the most expensive types of electricity production are used, such as washing machines or dishwashers. (Ontario Ministry of Energy, 2015) Saving most of my electricity use for off-peak hours would save me money and lower the…
