English Class Reflection
Having been accustomed to the British education system throughout the course of my school life thus far, English Language was a subject I took most pride in, being one of the few students in my class who could fluently speak and understand the language. My mother, born and raised in England, had made clear to her children from the start that regardless of the company we keep and schools we attend, English was to be our first language of the household and proficiency in the area was unquestionable. Luckily for me, I had the privilege of attending one of the best private schools in the city and was surrounded by a number of like-minded students who had grown up with the same principals and rules as I had in this regard. The English Language class, therefor, had become an avenue for competition amongst my peers and I, each constantly trying to impress the teacher with our writing skills, and hoping to outshine the others. After having successfully achieved an A+ in the final English Language board exam, a sense of supremacy, almost arrogance, came over me and I began to believe I could tackle any situation where my writing skills were put to test. Little did I know! Starting college in America and switching from the British System to the American one, I was informed about a mandatory college writing class that I, along with all incoming students, would have to enroll in. My earlier supremacy and arrogance deluded me and led me to believe that I would fly through the course with little effort. I enrolled into the College Writing 112 class. As the first day of the semester commenced and the rigor of the curriculum begin to take effect, being a Political Science major, I looked forward to my afternoon English Writing class, hoping it would be a tension reliever after the hectic morning I had had. Towards the end of the lecture, however, my domineering attitude towards the class dissolved and turned to dust as I realized this class would keep me on my toes throughout

Truth be told, it’s been a few years since the last time I walked into a writing extensive course like English 1302. The last time that I sat in front of a computer, and slaved away for hours trying to create the perfect paper was in 2011, during my first semester at Texas Tech. It was English 101, and people had that it’s a class that I should not take lightly, but of course I thought I knew better. Let’s just say that I figured out, I was not the greatest writer in the world after all, but high school definitely made me think I was. Before I entered into my first semester of college level English, it was not unordinary for me to write a paper that received applause from teachers all the way through senior year. I wrote essays on books, such as the “The Great Gatsby” to critically breaking apart poems. One assignment that I remember vividly was my critical summary over Robert Frost’s Poem, “The Road Less Traveled”. Alas, those easy days are gone. Most of my time now is spent typing up emails to staff and teachers. Since I have been enrolled at Texas Tech, I have worked in Texas Tech’s School of Law in the Administrative Office. Much my work is behind a screen typing up emails. It has taught me a lot, so I feel as though I’ve become pretty proficient when it comes to writing up formal messages or relaying information in a professional way. I believe that I have a decent amount of experience when it comes to my writing abilities, and hopefully that will continue to grow throughout my time in this class.…

As I began English 111 this summer I thought I was a good writer unfortunately. I was not skilled in writing like I expected. As I progressed in in this course it has become evident to me I lacked the proper structure when formulating an essay. I essentially saw that I was going to need a lot of improvement when devising a good thesis statement and fixing grammatic errors. I also had to refrain from using sentence fragments to improve the flow of my writing. Despite, all the obstacles, I have developed the skills needed to formulate an essay. However, this course has given me the knowledge needed to succeed in writing many well-structured papers.…

Nursing has been given the idea that a lot of writing is not needed after nursing school, but that assumption is incorrect. Nurses have a lot of daily task, many of them need good writing and comprehension skills which can be developed in English 101 and English 102 classes. Core classes in general will help and the foundations that are taught in those two classes can help make one successful in any career, nursing included. Nursing needs writing in these tasks: creating a daily plan for the patient, writing prescriptions (depending on which position of a nurse), creating a plan for the patient after being discharged, and for communication through emails. With the help received in English 101 and the help I will be receiving in English 102…

Before taking this English 101-A course, I had a particular perception when it came to writing essays and English language. In High school, I was a really lazy student. As lazy as they can come, I was that times 10. For as long as I can remember I had always coasted through Elementary school and Middle school with really great grades. I would take honor roll courses and get straight A’s and 1 B almost every year. So by the time I had reached my first year in High school 9th grade, I decided I didn’t have to pay attention to anything or anybody because I thought I was so smart. I literally attended school from 9th grade to 12th grade to pass. I thought it would serve no higher purpose to me other than a time to get in some solid nap time, get…

The skills I had developed up until this point further evolved in the AP (Advanced Placement) English class I attended during my senior year. AP English was the most challenging literature class I took during my time in high school; it was also the most enjoyable and rewarding. We read literary works such as “The Poisonwood Bible” by Barbara Kingsolver; “The Invisible Man” by Ralph Waldo Emerson; “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley; “The Things They Carried” by ???; and “A Doll’s House” by Henrik Ibsen. Although the reading load was rather intense, I especially enjoyed applying the critical analysis skills I had developed up to this point to these novels. It is difficult to establish which book was my favorite to read and interpret; I found each to be eloquently written and representative of realistic life situations, both contemporary and historical.…

When taking the course AP English Language and Composition, my qualities include being able to analyze text to find meaning and author’s purpose. It’s useful for understanding the text and help me during my exam; furthermore, I am able to write a proper formal essay with the skills I learned from last year. Throughout my life English has always been my most difficult subject. Even back in elementary school I would have 100 percent averages in all of my other classes except English. I do not know what it was that challenged me so much but I had a terrible time. With the start of my high school career coincided the beginning of my paper writing experiences. I would work for hours each day trying my best to write a paper that made sense and would flow smoothly between paragraphs. My countless hours of work, however, never seemed to pay off. Every single paper that I had returned to me from my teachers was always covered in bright red Sharpie marker, usually with a large “B” circled somewhere on the front. The words “hard to follow” were usually emblazoned somewhere across the top and then throughout my paper in that same smelly red…

The moment I found myself sitting at my desk, confused and shocked at the grade I had been given. Being the egotistical brat I was at the time, my first thoughts were “This has to be a mistake, an obvious mistake.” I waited for the end of class, fidgeting in my seat every second, all the while reassuring myself that I could sort everything out. Finally, the bell rang loudly and after the rest of the students had shot out of their seat and headed for the door, I stood and walked over to her desk and politely inquired about my essay. She quickly looked over the first two pages then handed me back the essay with little enthusiasm. “Your writing skills need some work. You were going off subject quite a bit”, she informed me. With an ego my size, even the smallest of criticism hit me hard. I nodded and realized that I still had so much to work on, but I was oddly confident this teacher could help me. Mrs. Hoer was her name, and I began to respect her more than any English teacher I had prior. She showed me how writing is far more than just sitting down at home and trying to think of something profound that will impress a teacher. I learned that language can have endless meaning and give so much enjoyment for readers who take the time to analyze literature. Questioning an author’s credibility and their reason for writing a particular piece were things I had never been asked to do until her English class. Throughout my senior year in high school I learned more than I ever had in the class with her. The concept I had of how easy English was became shattered, and I found myself being far more open to new ideas and styles or writing. If I had not been transferred into AP English that year, I may have never gotten over myself, and would have never progressed as far as I…

July 1993, Lexington, Kentucky. A woman gives birth to a beautiful baby girl with seven holes in her heart; thus began 19 years of visits to an esteemed cardiologist. Extremely worried, her parents inquired regarding their daughter's future, alleviating their worries, the doctor's advice to them was to be diligent and "treat her as you would a normal child." Knowing I have been different did not stop me from participating fully in life, especially during my childhood. In December 2012, we received the wonderful news that the final hole had closed. The odds were in my favor since I have been lucky to have never needed surgery, nor required hospital care from a critical injury. I believe that there is a reason I exist on this earth; and my blueprint…

    1. My last English class was very challenging. We worked mostly on analyzing and evaluating arguments. This included working with multiple articles and really understanding what the author was trying to argue. As a class, we really worked a lot with mapping and charting the texts. These seemed to take the longest to do because you are really digging deep into the text and trying to understand exactly what the author is trying to say. The most important thing that I learned is that “good writing is rewriting”. That was one of Micah’s quotes that he would say to us the entire semester, but it is true. You cannot expect to slide by with just one draft of your writing. We would spend weeks on just one assignment, making lots of revisions and constantly fixing things. This really helped me as the semester progressed.…
