Dictatorship: When Farmer Jones was the “ruler” of Animal Farm, the farm “government” was in dictatorship. As stated on page 1, “Mr. Jones, of the Manor Farm, had locked the hen-houses for the night, but was too drunk to remember to shut the popholes. With the ring of light from his lantern dancing from side to side, he lurched across the yard, kicked off his boots at the back door, drew himself a last glass of beer from the barrel in the scullery, and made his way up to bed, where Mrs. Jones was already snoring.” This is different from totalitarian government because although Farmer Jones does rule the animals’ lives he does not control their belief, attitudes or values. This portrays dictatorship because Farmer Jones could slaughter any of these animals at any time, he was their god in a sense. There have been many examples of democracy in Animal Farm but perhaps the most famous one is the entire conflict over the windmill. As stated on page 22, “ But he maintained that it could all be done in a year. And thereafter, he declared, so much labour would be saved that the animals would only need to work three days a week. Napoleon, on the other hand, argued that the great need of the moment was to increase food production, and that if they wasted time on the windmill they would all starve to death. The animals formed themselves into two factions under the slogan, ‘Vote for Snowball and the three-day week’ and ‘Vote for Napoleon and the full manger.’ ” This is an example of a democracy because the farm split according to their Snowball’s and Napoleon’s ideas on the windmill and both of them are representing what the animals on the farm believe in.
