Exotic Pets
General Purpose: To persuade

Specific purpose: To persuade my audience that owning wild animals can be dangerous in the animal health and the owner’s life.

Central idea: Exotic animals should not be kept as pets. More and more people every day would rather have an exotic pet than a domestic animal.

I. INTRODUCTION

A. Attention getter

1. Show pictures of wild animals.
2. How many of you have ever said you wanted a pet monkey when you were at the zoo last time? Or imagined how neat it would be to have a tiger sleep at the foot of your bed instead of just a dog? That all sounds wonderful at first but how many people do you know that have ever had an exotic pet and not regretted it immediately? According to the Human Society of the United States in one of their recent surveys, "90% of exotic pets die within the first year and 90% of the remainder die in the second year. That means that only 1% lives past the age of two."

2. Tell a story about a woman being attacked by a chimpanzee.

B. Background information of the topic

1. The difference between a domestic pet and an exotic pet.
• A pet is an animal kept for companionship and enjoyment or a household animal. C. Preview of the speech (central idea)

1. Now, why is it dangerous to own an exotic animal? From my research, here are 5 reasons why
1. It’s illegal
2. You can’t domesticate a wild animal
3. Wild animals carry diseases
4. It is bad for the animal health
5. The owner life is at risk
But this is why people keep exotic animals
• Exotic animals are forced to not survive in the wildlife environment, because most exotic animals are slaughtered or killed by local law enforcement. People keep exotic animals because they needed home and safety.
• Exotic animals are unique and unusual. Many people like exotic pets because they are the only one in their community that has one.
• Exotic animals are interesting to interact with, and in some cases produce intense interactions

According to the Library of Congress, in Mexico exotic pets are allowed if registered with Mexico environmental authorities. There also has to be respect for certain regulations by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. If the regulations are not respected, people could get fined, their permit could be suspended, they could go to jail for thirty-six hours, and or their pet could be confiscated. In the US, there are five states that have no laws on keeping wild animals as pets. There are twenty-one states that ban exotic pets, and the rest of the states require for people to have permits or only allow certain species as…

Owners who bond with their pets as cubs or kittens, bottle-feed and cuddle them, often convince themselves that their relationship is special and their full-grown bear or cat will never turn on them. Yet it’s not just about cuteness and beauty; controlling an animal that arouses fear in other people can be appealing. That’s why those with egos that need feeding, from Kublai Khan to William Randolph Hearst to Mexican drug traffickers, are connected by the desire to stock their personal zoos.…

I am not very fond of animals. Well, I like animals- do not get me wrong, but I do not know how to take care of them. You see, I am a clumsy person. Honestly, I am. Out of nowhere I am walking, but randomly I am on the floor. I am normal like that. Anyway, I never thought I was going to have a pet, but I did. It was something I did not expected, and it was the best thing I’ve experience. There is a saying that I related a lot, “life is not as we expected”. Yeah, I was not expecting to take care of a guinea pig.…

Many people enjoy the company of a pet, whether it be a cat or a dog; these animals provide a person with companionship and affection. Pet owners become emotionally invested in their pets and treat them as if they are part of the family. Some pet owners will pamper and shower these animals with affection as well as let them have the run of the house. However, a person needs to remember animals do not function as humans or have the capacity to reason. There are people who believe wild or exotic animals can be domesticated as well as become family pets. When taking care of pets such as a lion or primate these animals require more attention and owner responsibility. There are many states within the United States that have laws banning the ownership of wild animals. However, people are still purchasing exotic animals as pets through the black market. Local communities should not allow residents to own wild animals as companions or breed exotic animals for profit because of the domestic environment, health hazards, as well as the additional financial and social responsibilities associated with owning such pets.…

1st, if they are not in their natural habitat they can not reproduce naturally. That means that they are forced to mate and they can not do anything about it. They also do not grow natural instincts because when the animals have babies they are taken after the first day so their parents can not show them anything they would need in the wild. This is important because if they escaped somehow they would need to know how to survive in the wild. PETA…

In the wild, animals are often forced to scavenge to find food to survive, where as in captivity, the animals are regularly, and fully fed. Also, in the wild, animals can be scorched or frozen to death, or have their homes ruined by another weather condition. In captivity, there are special temperature regulated areas for the animals to retreat to, allowing them comfort, privacy, and shelter. For all these reasons, captive enclosures are more dependable than the natural habitats.…

The problem with exotic pet ownership has been escalating over the years, especially in the last ten to fifteen years alone. Many state governments in the last couple years have been trying to pass laws and different measures to deal with this issues such as an Ohio lawmaker that is proposing a new law that would ban people from owning most exotic animals starting in 2014 (Weekly Reader News Addition) and in Tennessee where lawmakers pitch new exotic ownership rules which would ban the private ownership, import, sale and transfer of most wildlife--regardless of whether or not they are indigenous to the state (DVM Magazine). A few big problems with owning exotic pets is they are often really dangerous and many people cannot provide…
