Eye of The Storm
Lesson Objective:
After reviewing key vocabulary from and reading for comprehension the book titled, Eye of The Storm the learner will complete a comprehension and vocabulary worksheet.

Standard Addressed: CC 5th Grade ELA Standards #1 & #4
#1: Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.
#4: Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes.

Instructional Procedures:

1. Anticipatory set:
a. Review key vocabulary words and their definitions with students.
2. Perceived Objective and Rationale:
a. “As we are reading this book, I want you to pay special attention to vocabulary words that we have just talked about. I think that by seeing the words in context we will get an even better feel for their meanings.”
3. Input:
a. Read Eye of the Storm
b. Periodically stop to ask students the corresponding comprehension questions in the basal textbook. Make sure that they are using examples from the informational text to support their answers.
4. Modeling:
a. Model answering a sample question using details from the text. “For example, if the question asks: based on the details in the section titled Storm Chasing, what do you think it would be like to photograph a lightning storm up close? you should respond by saying something like: the sentence in the book, ‘suddenly, a jagged bolt of lightning shoots from the cloud’ makes me think that storm chasing is both scary and exciting..”
5. Checking for Understanding/Guided Practice:
a. Answering comprehension questions using examples from the informational text to support their answers.
6. Independent Practice
a. Students will complete a vocabulary and comprehension worksheet.

Assessment:
1. Before: students attentiveness to the vocabulary review
2. During: students responses to comprehension questions
3. After: completion of the worksheet

    It's a fact, when talking on the subject of war, we presume that if the generals and country leaders didn't start them, they would by no means occur. In a book like Storm of Steel by Ernst Junger, though, there seems to be one more requirement, ready and enthusiastic soldiers. Junger would have probably preferred themselves "warriors" or barbarians. It's within this book that Ernst Junger tells the story of a man who describes and most likely believed that the battlefront of World War I was not a awful place to be, in fact that it was a quite magnificent place to be. Without a doubt, the reader can tell that Junger feels it was an honor to able to participate in Kaiser Wilhelm's war for the good of the Fatherland. Ernst Junger was simply an infantry fighter from World War I who never bent to the idea that the German army had been completely defeated and its crusade of conquest ending. He was injured numerous times, and still carried on and continued to fight armed and ready. Because of that perseverance in the name of the Fatherland and the glorification of his effort as portrayed in this book, it's obvious why it's a favorite in Nazi Germany.…
