Film Review: The Great Debaters By Melvin Tolson
The Great Debaters is an intriguing film set in the 1930s about a professor that goes by the name of Melvin Tolson who teaches students from Wiley College, in Texas, the fundamentals of debating. During this day in age, if an African American didn’t “stay in their place” they would be ridiculed for such insane behavior. One can only imagine how difficult it must have been for them to get through a debate without caring if they had crossed the line on a touchy subject. But through it all this debate team became one of the most successful teams in America. They were undefeated after they won national championships over Harvard University. There were three main debaters in this film; two male and one female. The females name was Samantha Booke. …show more content…

His trial and tribulations are stuck between him and his conscientious. Throughout the film he has doubt about if he can execute a speech well. To do this he has to get past his butterflies and nervousness. His age sometimes got in the way of other’s looked at him and would look down on him. At first, he was frightened of speaking in public in front of an audience, so he would be nervous here and there. Yet, when it was time for the big debate against Harvard, he put all his fear to the side and proved himself to be quite a man.

Then we have Mr. Henry Lowe.

In this movie, race is an issue especially for the African Americans. There was scene in the movie where the main characters were driving late at night heading to reach the next town of the debate tournament. As they were on their way, they saw two black males hung up from a tree and lynched to death.

This true story speaks to us about how an elderly black woman fights versus the white lawyers and judges to serve justice to the man who killed her husband. In class we studied how the law is blind to some in the legal system, one of the lessons that we studied that includes blindness in the law was the "whites vs. blacks", where the whites would stand a higher ground than the blacks and could get away with something terrible such as murder. This is what happens in the movie and even though fighting for it took 27 years Miss.Evers finally got some peace at mind knowning she put the bad man in jail. Without this blindness, there shouldnt have been 27 years of fighting an countless amounts of hours could have been placed in other cases much needed help. To conclude, the "white vs. blacks" issue was a key concept in unit 1 that was represented durring the movie.…

When Wiley College debated Oklahoma City University the topic of discussion was whether negros should be admitted into state universities or not. The Oklahoma City debate team cited Dr. W.E.B. Dubois statement that, "It's a silly waste of money, time, and temper to try and compel a powerful majority to do what they are determined not to do".…

The movie “The Great Debaters”, directed by Denzel Washington, and screen writer Robert Eisele, is base on a true story. The movie shows the way how people use to discriminate on the colored people, back in the days. The most important job in America is the education of our young people. The people were separated; the low class people living in one area and the high class people live in a separate area were the class is higher. A professor of Wiley College named Mr. Melvin B. Tolson held the debating team. He was the coach of the debating team. There were 72 students who signed up for the debating team but only four can be one team. So a try outs was held at Mr. Tolson’s house and the remaining four who made the team are Hamilton Burgess, Henry Lowe, Samantha Booke (alternate), and James Farmer Jr.(alternate). They team trained for a while and was on an adventure that they all enjoy; going around challenging other schools in their area. After, a party James Farmer Jr. went to Mr. Tolson’s house and saw him running into the woods; he followed behind. There was a revolution going on at the time. No one should have known about the revolution but somehow the sheriff found out and disrupt the meeting and carry the one who were captured to the station and torture them for information as to what they were planning. One afternoon, the debating team had decided to go out for lunch to celebrate their victories and to be the first black school to go against a higher class college. Hamilton burgess wanted to know what was going on because he saw the sheriff watching Mr. Tolson’s house. If there was anything going on, his father told him to drop out of the debating…

A huge feel of the film is gotten through the time period it took place in. People’s views on race were made very publicly within the jury. Many of them seemed to have personal vendettas against different races. They deemed the boy’s Hispanic race to be slum and nothing more than that. A universal problem that is shown in several ways throughout the film is personal prejudice getting in the way of judgment. Juror number ten’s reason for saying the accused boy was guilty was because he felt people from slums should not be trusted and that they kill one and another for fun. His prejudice lead him to discriminate against the boy initially by voting guilty earlier in the film, before being convinced in voting not guilty. This was during the civil rights era and all of that. We all know blacks weren’t treated equally and this makes it…
