Final Presentation Guidelines
GB 459 Final Case Analysis Presentation Instructions and Guidelines Part 5 of your group case analysis is a 20 minute group oral presentation. This semester the presentation will be recorded using the Blackboard Collaborate tool integrated in to our course web site. If you attended the Glo-bus orientation, you have already participated in a Collaborate session and have your computer set up with the right Java and other settings. If you did not attend a Glo-bus orientation via Collaborate, go to the Collaborate tutorials folder posted on the Course web site to find out how to make sure your computer has the right settings and to get started in Collaborate. Each group has a Collaborate room set up for its use and you will want to use that for your group work and to practice making several recordings prior to this graded presentation being due at the end of the semester. There are also instructions for recordings in the Collaborate tutorials folder. If you experience technical issues with Collaborate, the help link is: http://support.blackboardcollaborate.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=8336 Guidelines for Presentation Because your time will be limited (20 minutes in all), your final presentation should focus primarily on your recommendations, and should not contain the full analysis that normally goes into the paper write-up. Think of yourselves as a consulting team giving a presentation to your Company’s executive team and you want to make the best case for the recommendations and rationale for them as you can in only 20 minutes. Here are some tips and instructions: • You should not simply read your complete case study paper into your recording. Aside from taking far too long, it would be incredibly boring. The art of making presentations is quite different from the craft of writing papers. You should not approach them in the same manner. • Start your presentation by giving me a quick summary of your focal company: a very quick review what they do and more on

Each student will present a written case analysis which should be no more than 5 and no less than 4 double-spaced pages and is due on the date and time indicated in the course schedule (last page of this syllabus). While I focus on the content of your essay for my grading, clarity of presentation and organization is essential for me to follow your ideas. A good starting point is to look at the case discussion questions in Quiz 4. But your answer cannot be a series of answers to questions but must rather be an essay. Some of these questions will guide your case analysis and should be an aid to you in formulating your answer. Therefore, reading the case before the end of the third week so as to deal with these questions should help you do well in the case project. A good approach to the project is to make sure you include all the elements that I look for in my grading of your assignment.…

The minicases are designed to help you learn the mechanics of the methods covered in class and to give you an opportunity to apply the concepts in simple and illustrative contexts. Please note that minicase assignments require careful interpretation and analysis of the given problems. Points will be deducted if you misinterpret the information given in the case assignments. Discuss your assumptions and clearly explain your quantitative reasoning. Answers (even correct answers) without logical and quantitative reasoning will not receive credit. Minicase analysis assignments will be posted on Compass. This is sometimes an individual assignment but sometimes a team assignment. Late assignments are generally not accepted. Group Project: In the last week of the course, each team will submit an original minicase. The minicase should be based on a real business situation (in the past, in the present, or in the future) and must be analyzed using one or more of the methods or concepts discussed in this course. If you’d like, you can also add other methodology that is not discussed in class. Each case must consist of two parts. In part 1, a business decision problem must be presented with essential information. It can be a fictional situation, but it must be based on a real business situation. Part 1 might look like one of the short cases that we analyze in this course and the text (excluding exhibits) must not exceed 5 pages typed single-spaced in 12 pt font. (See Darden’s cases for the document format). In part 2, the solution to the problem posed in part 1 must be given. When you construct the minicase, you should have pedagogical values in mind, i.e., think of writing a teaching case or an open-book exam for future MSTM students at the University of Illinois. Your submitted work will be evaluated based on how well the decision analytical framework is utilized to solve a…

PROCESS: 1. Form groups of three or four students. Please note that groups with less than three or more than four students are not acceptable. 2. Read and discuss the enclosed Case Study. 3. Complete the assignment at the end of the Case Study. Prepare a report in the form of a professional business document (up to 20 pts). 4. Prepare and deliver a 15-20 minute professional presentation, including the use of PowerPoint (up to 20 points). All members of the group have to participate in the presentation. GRADING: The group project will be evaluated on the basis of the logic and the quality of the messages, the judgment of the authors, the use of information sources, and the presentation quality. The maximum number of points a group can get for the Group Project is 40. Each individual student will receive the grade of the group, unless the majority of the group states in their report that a particular student did not perform his or her duties satisfactorily. In such a case, the Professor will determine the number of points for that particular student based on a consultation with the group. The points for the group project will make 10 percent of your final grade. The deadline for submitting your report and having your presentation prepared is the beginning of week 15 (the first class session we have on that week). Late submissions will NOT be accepted.…
