AC 1.1 Describe the value of formal and informal performance assessment in the workplace

The Value of assessing performance
1. There are two main types of performance assessment in the work place, they are formal and informal assessment below are types of both assessment methods and descriptions of the same
a. Formal
i. Scheduled meetings ii. Management team meetings iii. Appraisals iv. Quarterly review
v. Goal settings vi. Employee surveys vii. Customer surveys viii. Disciplinary process
b. Informal
i. Group meetings ii. Project meetings iii. Daily feedback iv. Field visits
v. Community feedback vi. Image of the organization vii. Help desk tickets
Formal performance assessments are beneficial because they can be recorded and provide data which the team can use to backtrack. The set date of the meetings can also help with the content i.e. information bought to the meeting as persons are able to prepare in advance to contribute

This is when an informal meeting is ideal. One benefit of an informal assessment would be on a new project or teaching of a new skill, this allows the manager to hold a quick chat to correct, instruct, or complement the employee in a timely manner. Informal meetings also helps the same employee to feel supported during the project.
Another benefit of informal meetings is to build trust between manager and employee. For example if I have an underperforming employee who is earnestly trying however is finding some areas of the work difficult, an informal quick meeting on how what he can do to improve his performance will be best. This will ease some pressure off the employee as well as help the employee to feel as if they can come to me for assistance if “stuck” in a situation.
