Major Chemical Reactions:

Procedure:
1. Measure 120 mg of 1,4-dimethoxybenzene, 0.4 mL acetic acid, and 0.2 mL t-butyl alcohol
2. In a 10X100 mm reaction tube, dissolve the120 mg of 1,4-dimethoxybenzene in the 0.4 mL of acetic acid.
3. Gently warm the solution within the reaction tube, it may be necessary to agitate the solution with a glass stirring rod and add the 0.2 mL of t-butyl alcohol
4. Cool the solution in an ice bath, once the solution is sufficiently cooled, place the reaction tube containing the solution within the fume-hood and add 0.4 mL of nitric acid (see note below) drop wise with a Pasteur pipette.
5. After each drop of acid into the solution, mix the solution thoroughly using a glass stirring rod.
6. After the addition of 0.4 mL of nitric acid, place the reaction tube in an ice bath and let stand for approximately 15 minutes.
7. Stir the mixture thoroughly with a glass stirring rod, remove reaction tube from ice bath and allow the solution to reach room temperature (approximately 15 minutes).
8. Measure 2.5 mL of water into a container, return the reaction tube containing the solution to the ice bath, and carefully add the water to the solution 1 drop at a time.
9. Separate the reaction solution from

Your teacher will demonstrate for the class the reaction of metallic copper with concentrated nitric acid, HNO3. This must be done in the fume hood. (Caution: Avoid breathing poisonous gases. Avoid contact of skin with nitric acid. It burns skin and clothing.) One student will be asked to feel the side of the demonstration beaker and report to the group. The products formed are copper(II) nitrate solution, Cu(NO3)2(aq), and nitrogen dioxide gas, NO2(g).…

The purpose of this lab was to synthesize triphenylmethanol from benzophenone and bromobenzene by the formation of a Grignard compound with the reagents bromobenzene and magnesium metal. The bromobenzene was first transformed into the Grignard compound and was then reacted with the benzophenone to make the final product. The mixture was then mixed with sulfuric acid and the organic layer was extracted via a separatory funnel. The mixture was then recrystallized from methanol and was allowed to dry and the percent yield, melting point, and the IR was obtained. The mass of the product obtained was 5.45 grams and the percentage yield was determined to be 41.95%. The melting point range obtained from the final product was 89-91°C which was much lower than the literature value of 160-163°C. The peaks from the IR showed the formation of an alcohol group at 3460 wavenumbers and the presence of aromatic rings at 1600 and 1490 wavenumbers which confirms the successful formation of triphenylmethanol.…
