HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL EXCEL COURSE

All Masters programs in the Lindner College of Business involve coursework that presumes facility with spreadsheets. In Statistics, Managerial Accounting, and Financial Tools, spreadsheets are indispensible tools. In a host of other classes they enable superior analysis, organization, communication, and planning as well. Therefore, before starting coursework in any Masters program, students must PASS the On-line Introduction to Spreadsheet Modeling Course available from Harvard Business School Publishing for $25.90. Students who do not pass the Pretest should budget approximately 15 hours for the on-line instruction and the Post-test. (Please contact the Graduate Programs Office at 513-556-7020 if you need another try to pass the post-test. We will strive to enable that within 72 hours. You will not have to pay again. )

Many students who take this course do not plan to be accountants. If you are in that group, you might be thinking, “If I’m not going to be an accountant, why do I need to know accounting?” In response, consider this quote from Harold Geneen, the former chairman of IT&T: “To be good at your business, you have to know the numbers—cold.” Success in any business comes back to the numbers. In business, accounting and financial statements are the means for communicating the numbers. If you don’t know how to read financial statements, you can’t really know your business. Many companies spend significant resources teaching their employees basic accounting so that they can read financial statements…
