Henry's Daughters Analysis
As a key architect of the technology of the world, an engineer has a professional obligation to not only their employer’s satisfaction and safety, but to the public who will be directly or indirectly effected by their designs and choices. We are beholden to far more than our client. This is a dynamic that plays a key-role in “Henry’s Daughters”, which is a film that focuses on the actions of a retired engineer (Henry) and his two daughters who are both engineers. The purpose of this essay will be to underpin the key scenes of the film that lead to the ultimate downfall of these three engineers and use them to emphasize the importance of Ethics in the field of Engineering. She is appointed as a supervisor for GUIDEME on the SANSHANDS project, which is heavily implied to be due to her father’s ‘guiding hand.’ Very early on in the project, she realizes that the competition is rigged in favor of GUIDEME over their competitor OUTOCAR. When she voices this to her boss, the aforementioned Jeff of the DOT, he all but confirms her suspicions and recommends she keep from investigating further.
II.1.F. Engineers having knowledge of any alleged violation of this Code shall report thereon to appropriate professional bodies and, when relevant, also to public authorities, and cooperate with the proper authorities in furnishing such information or assistance as may be required. Julie (Natalie Cottrell) is Henry’s youngest daughter who is also an engineer who is working for the start-up OUTOCAR and is one of the engineers for their team in the DOT competition. She and Laura live together, and over the course of the competition share information from both teams that is supposed to be private. Laura even goes so far as to allow Julie to base her version of the code for the automated car off of GUIDEME’s.

If engineers' judgment is overruled under circumstances that endanger life or property, they shall notify their employer or client and such other authority as may be appropriate.
III.1.E. Engineers shall not promote their own interest at the expense of the dignity and integrity of the profession. All of these situations could have been prevented and resolved if any of those involved had acted in accordance of the ethical code as dictated by the National Society of Professional Engineers. With each situation described, one or two Cannon(s) of the NSPE Ethical Code is attached, each pertaining to the specific case described. These Cannons are the rules all Professional Engineers are expected to operate by in their work, whether they work for a private company or a government department. In the case of Henry, adherence to these Cannons –or the lack thereof— had become habitual at this time. At some point in his career, he had found that disregarding them had only stood to be a benefit to him. There was little chance he was ever going to adhere to them again. That means the only way these situations that occurred due to his meddling were going to be stopped was by the other people
