The smooth brush strokes that were used on the dress and hair of the child and mother, give a warm feeling when viewing this piece. Cassatt also used positive space within this painting, as the mother and child are in the foreground, and the trees seen through the window are faint in the background. The painting is not scattered, which would make it hard to depict. The child is still and content, but the mother is shown as moving. She is shown moving because of her hands in the position of sewing a thread, or knitting.
