Having books, toys and other resources available that highlight topics such as religion, disabilities or adoption helps children to understand that not everybody is the same and will help them to be accepting of peoples differences and the situations that they may have to face. By having dressing up clothes and role play areas in the classroom children will have a chance to try on the different clothes that other religions and cultures wear around the world and as they would have already seen or wore these clothes in school then they won’t feel the need to single out or discriminate against someone they see wearing something different or their cultures tradition clothing.
Language and terminology
The language and terminology you use when around children can have a major impact on their attitude towards other people. You need to realise that you are a role model to children and that they may copy everything you say and do. If they hear their teacher speaking poorly, using offensive or discriminating words about certain groups of people such as black people, Muslims or people with disabilities then they will think that it is acceptable to act in the same way towards those people also.
